Have an old 1974 1275GT service message from BLMC/Sweden that they recommend 125/12 for winter tires. These are narrow and tiny for 4,5" wide steel wheels and hard to get. I had 135/12 tires,I guess from the Fiat 126 and was pleased with them. Still obtainable as a winter tire,at least in Europe.

Yes the e-mail should be valid. I´m in CT, new England.

Not much snow here compared to what I grew up with, but way more idiots that don't know how to drive when you have couple of snow flakes around. Which is why I was debating getting something with a wee more traction in the snow.

I used to drive around in a Suzuki Alto 800 first after getting my licence, and regardless of the tyres on it, never managed to get it stuck. Not as much fun as the mini though !

Ah, in Iceland you have those nice thermal vents to warm things up. None here in Ottawa, though occasionally too much hot air from Parliament Hill. I learned to drive in winter, and the family car only ever had summer tires, biased ply no less. My first two cars were Minis and had 10" biased-ply summer tires. Once I even went for a mile or so on a snowmobile trail. Go for "all" season but the correct size, and you should be fine.

It's not just the rideheight vertically - the tyre touches the radius arm and radius arm bracket at the back, and catches on all sorts of bodywork at the front.

As a pretty general rule, with only a very few exceptions, a 165/70/12 will not fit.

Be cautious about the 165/70 R12's  the aspect ratio " /70  " may be too tall and the tires may rub. Typicaly 165/60 R12 or 145/70 R12 will be OK if your ride height isn't set low.

I have been shopping for tires for my daily driver and discvoerd that "all season" now means "all seasons except winter". The basis of this is that the tire's tread compound gets too stiff below a certain temperature, and its grip ability falls away.

Hi All,

I have been debating whether to get a winter or all-season tires for the mini. It might be good to be able to use it in a pinch when the roads are not to salty here in New England but where the yokohama A539 tires are not optimal.

I have found Yokohama Y372, 165/70R12, All-season tire available somewhat locally, at a reasonable price. Has any one tried those out on their mini ? If so how do you like them ?

Thanks, Sveinn
