A friend of mine needed one in a hurry and i believe from memory a VW was the same thread as his.

Check with someone who knows that Inno switch well before buying. I recall that the Inno looks the same as the non-Inno hydraulic switch but the threads are slightly different.

Perhaps a tread with Inno in the title might catch someone's attention. If no luck, let me know. I can track someone down for you.

Hello and thanks for the help. My switch is on the right side in the engine compartment. I touched both wires together and the brake lights work. I know that now the switch is bad and the location. Thank you for the help.

Currently available hydraulic switches, if that is what you have are very bad and don't last long.   Brake fluid finds its way past the pressure diaphragm inside the switch and renders them useless.

I went through several (between 3 and 4) over a few years before out of frustration finally deciding to install a later mechanical switch at the pedal box (actually from a Honda Civic from the wrecking yard).    It works great, reliably and an added benefit is that the sensitivity can be easily adjusted so the brake lights come on when the pedal moves 1/2 mm from the switch or more.  Even new hydraulic switches require brake fluid pressure to work, which takes more pedal travel than the mechanical switch.

Hydraulic ones should be available at Napa, Intermotor p/n SLS33.

I do not know Innos.  However, there are really only two possibilities.  Early Minis had a hydraulic pressure switch on the right side of the engine bay, down low on top of the subframe.  Later Minis abandoned that switch and replaced it with a mechanical switch on the pedal box.  When the pedal is pushed, it moves away from the switch actuator button and the switch contacts close.  Start your quest at the pedals.  If you do not see a switch that will actuate when the pedal is pushed, you need to look up front for the hydraulic switch.

Once you find the switch, the test is easy.  Remove the two wires from the switch and connect them together.  If the brake lights work with the wire terminals connected, the switch is not working.

i toldya!  i dont trust those books too... they have general instructions, not detailed, you have to have tremendous amount of common sense to understand it, which they believe i dont have ...  finding the brake light switch and wires you will need a tester. oftentimes, its the red and yellow wires going out to the backlight clusters.
