Comment about the 'faint paint' posted on the mk1-forum:

"Looks like the sheet steel manufacturers confirmation marking to me.  Dated, batch coded and the grade."

dimitris,

If the top 3 numbers reflect a date - 27   1   62 -, then likely January 27, 1962 for the External Tank rear (ROOF) and, with some experienced voices in the UK saying the FE number (front end assembly) suggests early 1960, then we have a bitsa, that was put together by good old USA craftspersons* in New York, likely some time in the 1960's (maybe 1970's), but certainly before the Woody was flat towed to Ohio from Troy, NY at the end of the latter decade.

However, from the Dustbin of History a fresh 'Woody' will emerge.  Maybe rightly an 'American Mini'!

I would think that that was a parts dept sticker at one time that etched into the steel? Why would they etch a body number on the roof right where it would be on display?

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

Here you go Spank...at the right rear quarter of the roof at the bottom of the photo.  Adj. arm of clamp is pointing at it...between the 2 holes for the roof rack slats.

That is AWESOME!

Post a wide shot to show approximate location on the body (for posterity).

Thanks for sharing the find.

Has anybody seen such apparent body part ID painted on a Mini roof...in this case a smooth roof 'Woody'???

Shell was walnust blasted years ago but I have had it in dry strorage from spring 2004 until we started to weld and expose the steel to gases.

The walnut blast took all paint & primer but not all of the painted ID info.
