lots of options when doing a conversion,   i have owned a lot of converted minis,  honda b series 1.8 (couple) and 2.0 as well as 1.8 zc,  vauxhall 2.0 and 2.5 v6, puegeot 1.4 and 2.0, rover k series, suzuki swift, a 1000cc honda cbr bike motor, several turbo a series from mild to wild, and currently a 1350 a series with 16v head conversion,. i have never owned a honda d series car but have driven one.  my advice to anyone wanting to do this is to spend some time driving a converted one first.  you see lots of these conversions for sale as abandoned projects or just after the swap is completed. why?   most folks dont understand that because you take an accord driveline and put it it in a mini doesnt mean it will drive or behave anything like an accord.  go to a mini meet and look at the cars and ask for some rides or to drive a few before you buy anything or start cutting up your car.

gotta agree with whats been said for the B-series! My first ride was like a space rocket launch, way too much for street use for me! Havent been in a D-series but I'd really like to! itching to convert the Pup.

I miss NJ chiming in as well. I say go for the D-series. Building 2 right now, 1 D16y8 with Greddy Td04h turbo ~200bhp currently, and the other NA D16 with ITB's shooting for 150bhp. Good gearing selection, better weight, cheaper, smaller, etc etc. Don't get me wrong, the B is brutal, I did a b18c1, but I think the D is the better all around setup for obvious reasons, bigger isn't always better...

My thoughts exactly when i was chiming in Brian. Nj went (from memory) a 998, to a 1275, to a 1380, to a B series FWD, to an AWD CRV set up in his Mini.

It depends how much cash you want to throw at it and how fast you want to go. The D series VTEC is by far the cheapest way to go and with a JDM engine putting out around 130 hp (double that of a 1275) traction and driveability plus the option to used the brakes you have and maybe the sub frame too depending on how much you can do yourself makes sense. The B series V TECH is around 180 hp and is more expensive plus creates some driveability issues in FWD format. If you go RWD or AWD with the B series traction and driveability is greatly improved.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.
