Remember the horrid looking old brake proportioning valve?  PHOTO 1

Now apart, brake cleaned and going back into a fresh water/molasses bath 1/2 cup molasses, 2 cups hot water & stir.

PHOTO 2 - of separated bits and cleaned ball & plunger assembly from one of the NOS (but used) ones for comparison.  Shuttle is not completely free, ball & interior of assembly should clean up well.

Been away 2 weeks...opened up the molasses/water baths...report later.

And no, NOT porridge or dessert!

The key thing Norm is to polish the seal mating surface. The gear teeth & splines look good. To complete the refurbishment, the bushes should be replaced too.

question: now that the gear is cleaned, about the pitting that is visible from the rust, will that pitting cause any trouble in use? (create noise because of not smooth tooth faces, or introduce any additional wear on the mating gear, etc.)?

I've also had good luck using coke (or store brand cola) as a de-rust bath.  Is the molasses and water even stronger?

Gear looks good  Rick.
I had 3x 998 primary gears spare recently, so I got them bored out to suit a 1275 floating front bush. Cost me Aus$50 each for machining.Cheaper than buying new 1275 ones.

Molasses/water won't touch grease/oil...needs to be removed if the bath is to get any rust underneath.

I would clean thoroughly & install new bushes before using in any event.

The primary gears need to go in a hot oil bath for a few hours the bearing material (DEVA) is designed to be self lubricating by soaking in oil which is retained by the bearing. I would suspect the dunking process will have leached all the oil out and replaced it with molasses!

Big improvement for the 998 primary gear after 1 week. Old rusty proportioning valve looks to be beyond help.

Nonetheless put both into a fresh bath - 4 cups hot water, 1 cup molasses. The beat goes on.

Here is the rusty thing after 3 weeks in the 1:3 molasses mix. I just hosed it off, then used a hand wire brush.
Looks like it will be good enough to use after a little more elbow grease.

My rusty 1275 primary gear (looked like Rick's) is still in the molasses bath, I will pull it out on Friday and take a pic. That will be after 3 weeks...

Rick……you've done almost enough testing now.

I think you're ready for human trials.

Hop in there and relax…..you may come out resembling Jeremy !

Pulled the rusty old brake proportioning valve out of the bath today...beginning to look normalish.

Also picked up a NEW but rusted primary gear (no charge) at the almost ALL BRITISH GARAGE S..E today.  It has gone into the bath as another test.
