Pulled the ugly beast out of the molasses/water bath again...got 1 brake line fitting out...the other 2 immoveable like the shuttle valve assembly.  The bolts for the bracket mounting were undone...nothing left of the bracket but the rubber bumper.

So, back in the bath

3 weeks later (went in the bath April 8), the ghastly, old hideously rusty brake proportioning valve came of the bath for rinse, SS brushing and reinsertion.

A fair bit of rust is gone, more loose rust came off with stainless steel wire brush.  May be able to unbolt the old mounting bracket...rather what is left of it...in a month.

At this stage the only reuseable bit may be the rubber bumper pad.

Rear corner bumpers (2 sets - ROO & spare set from OZ) not completely devoid of rust but...on their way to Victoria Plating tomorrow for re-chroming.

Pulled the corner bumpers, brushed & rinsed.  Just the last of the thicker rust on the inside bottom to be eaten away...but they are off to Victoria Plating for rechrome Saturday am.

After that time spent fermenting.. you could probably take that molasses, water and rust mix and do a quick run of "Shine'...should taste real special...

Took out the corner bumpers, rinsed and put back into the bath.  All 4 look so much better.  They will come out for boxing up to go for re-chroming next Saturday.  Will post PHOTOs next Friday.

One half of each of the two Brake Proportioning Valve sets is cleaned.  The other halves went back in the bath.

PHOTO - you can see that the shuttle valve on the right (yellow zap strap) is not fully free - should pop out more as per the left assembly.

Will look at the rustiest BPV at month end.

Ah...I will follow up with Mad Matt then...he test drove my Aussie Van before the purchase was completed (but after the new parts that I and the owner bought had been installed).  Matt's words, "It's a lovely little car."  And so it has been...not a show queen but a 'good little digger' on a road trip.

Hi Rick, Sorry, I have no pump spacers at the moment but Graham Russell says Matt Read makes and stocks them.

Hi Kevin,

Will be interested in the time it takes to de-rust the primary...and what it will look like afterwards.

As you have probably guessed it was GR's mentioning of molasses & water that took me to the farm co-op to fetch some molasses.

The molasses/water bath did a better job on two heads than the auto machine shop bath did after 2 tries.

Rick

PS - did I get one of your auto block oil pump spacers?  (I have a 1275 auto block that would be good for a build up)

I just unearthed a std/std small journal 1275 crank and it's primary gear still fitted. Looks uncovered, weathered and unused for 50 years! Crank wire brushed up OK but the primary gear has ferrous oxide all over. That is now sitting in a 1:3 molasses mix, I will fish it out in 2 weeks for a look.

Took the 2 Brake Proportioning Valves out of the bath and rinsed them...last in looks best, shuttle valve is free.  First in still has only partial shuttle valve movement.  Sprayed with brake clean and pressurized air...back in the bath...look again next week.

Yes Justin, there will be a strong Mini contingent of VMC Members 7 or more...you could check the entry list on the Classic Car Adventures website.

This will be the 3rd in a row we will have missed...was working on MMW at this time last year and also heading up our City's annual celebration 1st Saturday in June.  This year, the time & loot has gone into the Countryman build.

Hope to get to MMW in San Diego.

More items into the molasses/water bath today...the 2 corner bumpers from the OZ Van and the extra 2 corner bumpers I brought home from Australia.

Removed as much looser rust as I could from the backsides...then into a separate bath.

Will look in a week, April 23rd.

Note - Bath has 3 cups of molasses/9 cups of water, mixture covers the 4 rear corner bumpers...all in a standard size plastic wash basin.

No Minis on the Titanic in 1912 but you are right it is the ugliest rusted Mini bit I have ever seen.  Curiosity alone may see it in the bath until September.

Good grief! Is that the proportioning valve from the Titanic?
