IMHO Fleabay is only a decent deal if buying from a private seller "cleaning the garage".  Also IMHO, they have over extended their usefulness by trying to be everything to everybody.  I used to tell people to google "muffler bearings" as a joke and see that ebay even tries to sell imaginary products!!  Enough already!   We tried to do a "store" but their onerous requirements and oppressive fees resulted in poor service to you the customer.  Ever try calling them for installation instructions??

FleaBay throws a straight curve of 10% for most listings unless you become a super seller, that's why lots of sellers beg for perfect rating they get the lowest cost to sell if they keep everything "perfect". I liquidate old inventory on fleaBay because of the broad market, but I never expect to sell at a legit profit because they have their hands into the sale way too deep, as some said, Paypal, shipping, etc.
When I buy I generally check with online sellers because most of the time "off" fleaBay for new stuff is cheaper.

My  experience last week was similar to Alex. Looking for a new Webber throttle bracket because changed manifolds and found a bunch on eBay. The one I liked had several people selling, but then went to one of their retailers direct site and it was £10 cheaper than on eBay with same shipping. Bought direct. Prices higher as they have to add the additional eBay charges and I think can grab more attention And get more impulse purchases at the higher price. Look at how many times you see indivuals selling mini bits at cost or more than cost on eBay compaired to the regular suppliers. Buyer beware.

I started using feeBay when it was still pretty new, and it is interesting to see how its use has changed over the years.

It's gone from being a fantastic place to offer odd bits of interesting things and stuff to a much wider audience than a local autojumble or car-boot sale would reach, to a cynical professional market place.

I've found that the vast majority of new parts, equipment and bits I'm interested in are considerably cheaper from a traditional shop or an online store than on feeBay.

The clue is in the name - listing fees, final value fees, PayPal fees - something that can be sold at profit normally has to be hiked in price to achieve the same margin on feeBay.

Okay, it's generally different if you're buying from a private individual who is clearing a garage, but even then the postage fees charged are usually hiked enough to cover the expected fees...

I recently bought a couple of NOS sheet metal hole punches from feeBay without doing proper research first.

I bought the second swathe of four punches brand new from an online shop for less than one of the NOS ones on feeBay...

My bad, but it's rammed home the point to me that it just isn't the place for bargains that it once was.
