Since no mini's were ever issued with smog labels I'm afraid your screwed, it cannot be made compliant to 81 smog standards which would mean making it a grey market car. about the only thing you could do is find an earlier compliant car that need a lot of fixing and use your car as a parts source............................If you know what I mean....................

would anyone out there on Oahu-Hawaii, know how to register a Austin Mini 1981 13 digit serial#.  with the DMV. i have gone thru steps at the DMV, i called here and there, and found out that DMV won't even touch my registration paper work till the Vehicle Control Guys inspect it, and o.k'd it.
Talked to the VC at kapahulu, they said if i don't have a certification label and a letter from a Registered Importer, saying its in compliance with u.s. standards, (FMVSS) they will not even look at it. unless if my mini shows a label that it complies with u.s. standards. that will be a different story then. but it don't, there is one label on the left door jam with a label FAM8066 don't know if it means anything. i been researching on the web for it, FAM label, although came up with nothing.
i would appreciate anyone out there that could help me out. or am at a dead end with no hope. aloha #808-271-3671
