Question 1:
How long will it idle before it dies? A few seconds or several minutes? If it dies quickly, it might be too lean at idle and it is starving. If it idles smoothly at first, then gradually slows down then stops, it is probably too rich. Use the choke to test: warm it up and then let it idle. Don't touch the accelerator, but gently apply some choke to see if you can get it to idle longer or if it dies sooner.

Question 2:
When it dies, is it easy or hard to start? When it dies, remove each spark plug and sniff it. If they smell gassy and are sooty, it is rich. If clean and dry, it is too lean. With a 123 ignition system, and a close fuel mixture, it should fire up and run without choke once warmed. Again, without touching the gas pedal, will it start to run when you crank it, or do you need to apply some choke to get it started? Or do you need to hold the throttle open and it eventually catches? If it needs choke but not throttle, it is lean. If it needs throttle, too rich.

By the way, the oil in the dashpot ONLY regulates accelleration/decelleration (mostly acceleration) - when you suddenly apply lots of throttle or suddenly lift off. It dampens the effect of sudden throttle changes on the action of the dashpot by changes int vacuum. (Sorry mini4ever, you are "wrong again".)

Maybe the carb possibly flooding?  Sometimes a needle and seat can cause this issue.  I had experience with this in the past with an HIF44 on my engine.  Hope this helps.

Sir, check if there's oil in the Dashpot,if none ,do top it off to the proper level. One of the symptoms of low dashpot oil level,is engine dying at idle and crappy acceleration./ check also if you have a misfire./ check spark plugs

group, My engine seems to run fine except when it gets down to idle (about1000rpm). Then it runs for a few min and just stops. I thought it might be fuel so I pulled the pre filter, and the fuel filter inside the pump and both are clean. Wires were all connected to the pump. So the problem is a miss, but I can't find the source yet. Looking for suggestions. I have a 123 distributor on a 1380. The car is a 68 with limited fuses, so I don't see it as a fuse issue. I pulled the distributor cap, no arcing on cap or rotor. wires all in place. Any ideas to start checking? Jerry
