I guess that is what i meant. They shouldnt be written off completely. There are still uses for them. They can be swapped or rebuilt.

My Jap market car came as a 998 Auto with AC.... yikes
It's now an 1130 manual with no AC...goes like stink..lol

The autos are actually fun to drive and a blast to shift through manually.  If taken good care of and the proper use of 10/40 is followed, they can last.
The conversion to a manual lump is pretty straightforward....the rod shift even uses the same holes as the auto shifter

Buying smart on an auto Mini means buying it with enough room in your budget to re build the auto or convert to manual, it is not a question of if it will fail moreso when it will fail and they do with no warning on a regular basis. The main problem that i have seen is the po's do not keep them serviced with the more than frequent recommended 2k miles oil changes and they sit in hot traffic so parts wear and go out of adjustment then fail.
Now if you re build one and keep the oil changes and band adjustments to spec they are as good as 1960"s auto technology will ever get.
A good one shifted manually is a lot of fun.

I understand it is hard to know the history but offer accordingly. Saying they aren't even with looking at is a little harsh. Just buy smart that's all

Nothing wrong with autos, if taken care of properly. I love MINIs of all sorts along with my 1990 GTR.

Funny...I helped a well known board member load up an automatic from Japan.  Likely he will chime in.  I drove it up onto the trailer at Annacis Island.  He worked with Craig Hunter, Hunter Classic Sports Cars, Victoria on the buy.

Ours is a former JDM model. Nothing but good stuff to say about them. Extra goodies, low kms and rust. What more could you want ?

A quick search for "JDM" under "Forum":  (That's 'Japan Domestic Market' right?)
