Pretty cool, my '66 Cooper S was built on the same day as your car, but dispatched to a dealer in San Francisco. Probably shipped over together.

It also has the seat belt reinforcement, which I hadn't realized until this thread. Cool!

Thanks for all the replies.

I think it would be accurate enough to say that U.S. Federal laws regarding rear seat belts did not kick in until 1/1/1968. Up until that time, some State laws required rear seat belts...and likely at different times.  If we go by Parnell's information, the belt fitting spots started in July 1966. We can only assume that belts were fitted by U.S. dealers when necessary.

minimans: "So when did UK spec cars get rear belt mounts?"

Maybe Simon will be able to help us with that one.

We have 2 Mk1 US cars here and both have the captive nuts for rear belts. One is a 1966 OEW 1275 Cooper S which went to the San Francisco dealership and the other is an island blue Cooper S from 1967 which I believe came from Georgia, although I don't know which port it originally arrived at. These have both been re-imported to the UK in the last 5 years.

Your first clue should have been "Federal and State laws" It was only going to be a headache from then on!!!

This info strengthens the possibility then that CA spec cars were different to US spec cars in the 60's

According to John Parnell's Original book. He shows the change at body number 55735 (July 66) "Vehicles to USA fitted with reinforcing rear seat brace and modified rear wheelarch panels."

Chuck,

My US market Austin 67 S has rear seat belt mounts, even though I no longer own it..  Long ago (perhaps in 1996) I sent John Parnell some shots of the mounts for his next revision....similar to the ones John posted above.  I no longer have the Heritage Certificate (It went to the new owner) but I seem to remember that it was built Summer 67.

Paul

p.s.  I finally found the production date for my old car....31 August 1966 with rear seat belt anchors built in.

Comparing two Mk1 67 Cooper S cars. The White is a November 66 built UK market car. The Green a March 67 built U.S. market car.

My 67 S did not have provisions for rear belts.
This was a CA spec car however
