Just had a minute to check on it.

It won't go above 3500 rpm even in neutral. Don't know what oil is in the dash pot but it smells a hint of fuel. What do you recommend?

I just received the car the other day and the PO had to replace an item on the carb but said it was repaired and ran fine afterwards. Here's part of the email:

Hey - I was just prepping the car for shipment, and took it for a quick ride. The car ran great, and is fine, but when I got back, fuel was leaking from the Jet tube on the carb - the tube that joins the bowl to jet. The fitting broke on the bowl side. I have the carb off and am efforting a replacement part - there's an SU guy about 10 miles from me.

Will the rpms rise above 2,500-3,000 if standing in neutral (no load)?  Or will it not run at all above 3,000 rpm?  Might be fueling.

When returning home from MMEMW in 2016 we got 2 bad loads of fuel in Montana and the Mini did not want to run smoothly, struggled under load and...even going downhill from the top of Kootenay Pass.  Clean fuel at Salmo, B.C. fill-up ended the poor running.

And, I'd gone over the ignition, changed spark plugs, bought new spark leads...but, did not install them after the NAPA store clerk mentioned bad fuel being delivered in Montana.

How old is your fuel?  When was your carb last serviced?  Is there gunk/lacquer in the float bowl impeding fuel flow?

Check the carb's dashpot oil. What are you using? Too heavy an oil will delay the dashpot rising, causing a momentary richness. Too light an oil (or not enough) does the opposite, allowing the dashpot to rise causing a momentary lean-ness. Check the intake system for air leaks of any kind. Check the air filter and housing is in good condition.

Then check your distributor:
Check points are in good condition and properly gapped. Use a dwell meter if you have one.
Check your condenser to make sure it is good and properly connected.
Check the centrifugal advance isn't seized.
Check that the vacuum advance is properly connected.
Check the timing, remembering that it should be set at a specific rpm with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged on the carb side (preventing an air leak.)

If a tune up doesn't solve things, you may also need the valve lash adjusted.

.

Help me establish a baseline and work backwards.

1974 clubman 1275 gt, SU carb.

Car idles fine, use choke upon warmup.

In any gear it sputters and won't go above 2500-3k rpm. I would like to tackle this without replacing anything.

I did plan to go the elec Petronix route, wires, coil, etc. but I'd rather not just throw parts at it right now I would like your expert advice in actually doing diagnostic work.

Thanks
