on mine, the window on one side would always stay open, the other side wouldn't

I compared them and found the latch mounting holes in the body were drilled too far rearward on the "bad" side so the latch couldn't over center like it should. Re-drilled them closer to the window opening and now both windows say open all of the time. Threw away my tennis ball.

I put a short length of fuel line in the between the outer latch and the window frame and it worked a treat on a 100 mile trip today.

Whilst (got that word from Alex) at Bronte Brit Car Show on Sunday, l took a large tote box full of mini side windows (8-10) for sale-(Rear side windows) Not one bite, obviously not big movers, will sell the lot for $50.00, but you pick up or l can deliver to MID-OHIO this week end-

I sold that car back in 1975 or so, so finding a title to get a Heritage Cert for it won't be possible. I know it had a 1071 cause I overhauled it, and I know it had 7" discs because I had to replace them..... I may have some old pics somewhere.....not trying to start an argument, just reporting my experience - and it had a US Kansas title saying it was a '62, which means nothing I know.....

I have the one that's 42lbs that is the only one they had when I bought mine (in or around the late 90's).  Here is a link... not.  Put into the search feature "heritage certificate" and "all".   Now they have a ton of different ones.

Also my March 1960 is titled as a 1959 has been from new, could be something to do with the Model year as opposed to build date?

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

Maybe as regular Coopers were built prior to the S's and your car had 7 inch brakes it could have been a Cooper with a 1071 upgrade as stated the 1071 did not make it into production until 1963.

I think you need a heritage certificate.  That should prove it one way or another.  As said 1071 S's came out in April 1963.  Just because you had it and drove it doesn't mean much...a heritage certificate will eliminate all doubt.. And a cooper s had 7.5 inch discs while a regular cooper had 7" discs.

I know......or at least I thought so. However, I had an early Cooper S - German export version - and it was titled 1962. I know it was a Cooper S as it had dry suspension, 7" discs in front and a 1071 twin carb motor. I had this in the late 60's so it was before the trend of swapping everything around to "make" a Cooper S. So, maybe a preproduction model? or maybe they started building them in 62 and most didn't get registered till 63? who knows?

But I owned it, drove it and it was titled as a 62 - that much I know.

If you spelled Coper with two o's you may have better luck, maybe Wilson bought them out.

Never failed though....if I was parked at a car show, on the street or at a restaurant....my balls were usually taken.

A length of fuel hose....hmmm I'll look into that - seems like a workable idea, and it wouldn't show much as you said.

I have bungee cords but I'm not going to do that.

I thought the tennis balls had to be the little ones, like you buy for small dogs?

I admit I haven't looked into it much yet, I just noticed it the other day when I drove it right after buying the car.

If you must use tennis balls….use regular sized ones  

I've used tennis balls as well….pain in the arse really.

A bungie cord from one latch to the other (on the outside) works well for long trips.

I think I may try the trimming rubber option though in the future

I have used a slightly longer than the latches piece of fuel hose before as a temporary fix, kept them tensioned and less noticeable than tennis balls.

They are supposed to stay open but become loose with age. I have seen some folks notch the rubber seal to achieve over centering. You can crimp the rivet that holds the two pieces of latch together slightly to tighten it up.

On my 62 Cooper S the latches "overcentered" and kept the windows open. The ones on my 89 don't seem to do that, in fact I've seen folks put small tennis balls in there to hold the windows open.

So, do the latches not work that way now? Or do I have another issue limiting their movement and keeping them from doing as my older ones did?
