What may have happened is the temp sensor and thermostat wires can be hooked up backward and turn on the light for open circuit sensor. It won't ruin anything if they are backward so maybe just try swapping them and get codes cleared and see if the light comes back on.

BMW parts are notorious for both their high price and poor quality.
A friend who is a certified BMW/Mini mechanic did a Mini 1.6 engine rebuild 3 times before he got a quality part (which didn't throw a CEL). I neither know nor care which specific part it was.
That is just one of the reasons I parted company with my '10 Clubman S.

I'd take it back to the dealer who worked on it? they have an obligation to fix it for the problem you took it in for............
Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

Are you getting the same P0128 error code?
This code indicates:
- Leaking or stuck open thermostat
- Low engine coolant level
- Insufficient warm up time
- Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
- Engine coolant temperature sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine coolant temperature sensor circuit poor electrical connection
This could be caused by one of the following:
Defective Thermostat housing unit
Wiring to thermostat housing damaged during installation
Connectors at the thermostat housing not seating properly
Not sure what else you can check...

First, i wanna let you see this video, then we'll tackle you car issues later. If you have been going to Jiffy Lube for your car repair etc, then that's probably why..

Hi,
Any thoughts, advice, help, ideas, would be appreciated.
Bought our daughter her dream car, an 09 Mini Cooper Clubman. She has taken great care of it and gets the oil changed regularly, tires rotated etc. She is in Tallahassee at college, we live in Pensacola area.
She went to Jiffy Lube to get oil changed, they talked her into a Radiator Flush (a month ago now)
Car has been hell to deal with since with the yellow engine light coming on steady.
She came home for a visit, car started acting up, took it to our mechanic and he replaced the Thermostat housing assembly. We took her car to her in Tallahassee and wiithin 2 weeks she was calling saying her red check engine light was on, car was making a weird noise. Had it towed to a garage in Tallahassee, no mini dealers there and BMW dealer would not take it. The brand new assembly split on the bottom where it is glued from factory and all of her antifreeze leaked out. Luckily, it appears she did not majorly damage her car.
So, we paid to have the thermostat replaced for the second time in 14 days with (again) after market parts, new oil, new radiator fluid. No codes so we started to drive it home to Pensacola from Tallahassee, leave her with my car. Well, it threw a P0128 code within the first 10 miles. (Thermostat) My husband and I drove it from Tallahassee to Pensacola, where we live, to take it to the Mini Dealership. Ran perfectly the entire way. No lag, nothing. Mini of Pensacola suggests we replace the aftermarket thermostat assembly with a Mini Thermostat Assembly. Even though they checked the aftermarket one we just installed and said it is all in correctly and no leaks.
We opted not to spend yet another $650 dollars for a third thermostat assembly in a month, they kindly reset the codes for us and off we went. Codes came back on within a few miles. So, we replaced the thermostat sensor. Reset it again and yellow check engine light, steady one, came back on after a few hundred miles this time.
Have bled the radiator but not with the engine running and the heater on.
Any thoughts?
