I have used everything from 10W-40 to ATF and 3-in-1 20wt. What I found is that when the weather is cold the oil is thicker and can cause drivability issues to a point where you need to re-adjust the carb for cold running conditions. With the Synthetic 20wt I don't experience this. It works for me but I know others have had positive results with other oils.

Ask 10 people what oil they use in their dashpot and you'll likely get 9 or 10 different answers, but less than half will know what the oil actually does and why.

I don't know why K. Calver promotes synthetic 20W over regular 20W in his article. Most the arguments for synthetic oil are aimed at its use inside an engine, not a carburetor. I have always used 3-in-1 in the blue/white bottle in my cars and have no complaints.
I'm sure someone makes straight 20W synthetic. If you feel synthetic is important, I would start with the oil company websites (perhaps Royal Purple and Red Line among others ) to see who makes a straight 20W, then check their websites looking for local distributors. Though expensive, once you identify a maker for the oil, you will probably find it is available through Amazon. One quart will last you a lifetime so the one time expense is certainly justified.

Why synthetic?
The original SU oil would have been a straight, organic, 20W oil. If you buy 3-In-1 oil in the blue/white bottle, that's a straight 20W. The bottle is a convenient size to carry in the boot.

I was reading on here that I should try straight 20wt syn oil for my dashpot. Anyone know where to find some? I've googled with no luck.
