I remember the first time i drove a Mini, and loving the other mini drivers honking and giving the tumbs up, what happened? Did we just get old and cranky? ????

Wow thanks werewolf. Sorry I'm not jumping at the chance to buy your engines from 3000 miles away. Ive clearly stated that ive been busy and am currently dealing with some electrical issues in my mini. I'm prepared to buy an engine and transmission when I find one that is reasonable and can be seen in person. Not trolling or scamming.

Yeah it sucks... my wiper motor shorted and melted my wiper stalk wiring and which in turn melted to my ignition switch wiring. I will get back with you guys regarding engines when I get this all sorted. Unfortunately, with the holidays and work, it might be after the new year.
I'll add more info to my profile but in the meantime, my email is timunsell (at) gmail

You should include more info in your profile, I tried to email but you have nothing there. Sometimes easier to help if the rabble isn't involved.

Certainly not looking for anything free... just been super busy with work and a small electrical fire in my steering column has most recently become the priority

I'm in alameda. I don't have any spare engines. Email is on profile if you want to get together and talk minis. MOASF is our local mini club.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1985 998 A+ engine and tranny. The car was for sell and drove nicely but was a little weak off the line. Figured it was the gearing, but a compression check showed 180 psi 1-3 and 70 psi #4. Strangely #4 showed leak by the intake and exhaust valves as well as rings. Removing the head showed the valves were not sealing fully but were not the whole problem. I made a plate to seal the cyl. without the head in place, leak test showed 40 % leak by the rings. The cyl mikes .008 wear at the top of the bore compared to .003 in the other bores. The lifters were pitted and the cam lobes are going away. I sent the head out for guides herd exhaust seats and new multi groove valves and a surface cut. Having the head fully updated to unlead was in the $500. range. That is valve job, install valve guides, install hard exhaust seats, O/S intakes, late style exhaust valves and surface cut. Keepers, retainers and springs.
The only solution for the block is a rebore with new pistons. This will not be cheap but the 998 we have is cheaper than a 1275 core unit. I think Bill's offer is for shipping only. Compression test, leak down test and oil pressure test would be a good idea before buying a core engine.
Oh yeah, the synchros and shift forks in this tranny will need replacing while we are inside. Machine work, parts and labor not much difference between a 998 and 1275 build. Steve (CTR)

Have you checked with MOASF and their boards? You may find something more local. I know someone in Sac who has some motors. Any reason you want a 998 and not, say, a 1275?
