Counter & Jolt: You guys sure do nice work. He's my solution to the horn situation. Red's the horn, yellow is the brights.

8port bought a quick release from Kegs.

I'll see if he can post some pictures of it.

(Haven't seen it myself and am curious)

I went a different route with my mini. I decided to cut and reweld the shaft to allow a quick release wheel.

Oh, btw, this is the boss that the quick release will be attached to. The quick release is only set up for 70mm or 74mm on 6 bolt bosses.

eBay for 70mm mini boss
13" wooden Mountney Steering Wheel
Steering Wheel Button (no idea where MOMO came from)
1" Quick Disconnect (Though, you may want to seek alternatives)

I may turn it down should I dislike the distance, but think it should be fine. I am dropping the steering wheel down a bit anyway so the distance might be better or worse. Won't know till I get there.

I'll have a 12" steering Mountney steering wheel, boss, and center button for sale should anyone be interested.

Yep, that is exactly what is there. Unfortunately, at some point in the past the horn wire in the column broke off, so I'll have to fish one down and resplice into the line somewhere.

The assembly does look good.  If you become unhappy with the Chinese quick-release, I believe NRG makes a similar design with about the same stack height.  Of course, being NRG it costs a lot more.  Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

I assume the center of the quick-release has two button contacts for the horn circuit.  You'll need both of those for the horn to work.  One will be the permanent ground connection between the wheel and the steering column, the other is for passing the ground connection through the horn button to the horn or horn relay.

Here is the quick release attached. Bolt pattern is the Mountney as is the wheel. Set it up so there is about .025 of clearance between the connect and the wheel frame.

I will definitely heed your advice on testing the connect!  Thank you.

I have another chunk left over. Enough to make a second, so will probably be doing so, but will be waiting to see how the disconnect performs first. If there isn't a need, i may just use it to make myself a new sub-platter for my turntable.

I encourage you to rigorously yank on the quick-release before taking the car for a drive.  Make sure it is coupled well and won't work loose.  For future reference, NEVER buy a Chinese steering wheel.  I have seen a few of them and they are made of thin, fully annealed aluminum.  They bend with the slightest push or pull.  I bought one several years ago and was so frightened by the "quality" that I immediately removed it from the car and made a clock out of it.

Also make sure that bolt pattern you have is right for the Moto-Lita.  You said 101mm.  I believe their 9 bolt pattern has a 4" bolt circle.  I don't know what the BC is for the 6 bolt pattern.

Yeah, I already picked the eBay one up. The quality is definitely not the greatest, but after machining the cast connecting pieces a little it goes together just fine. I don't think I would recommend getting one though. My primary concern was (beyond it working) the depth of the unit. At 1" thick the chinese design is tough to beat.

Your work looks nice.  Were you able to find a Mini compatible hub for the steering column?

If you have not bought your quick-release yet, I caution you against the $16 ebay units.  I have seen a couple of them up close and tried to make one work for a friend.  The unit I tried to work with was absolutely terrible.  We eventually had to give up.

A discount quick-release can be bought from Forever-Sharp.  I believe they copied (or have a very similar design to )  the units sold by NRG.  I installed one of the Forever-Sharp quick-releases on a friends car and was impressed with the quality for the cost.

So, as the electric on our cars is so old anyone with a length of wire could pop the hood and jump a hot to the coil and steal it, I thought it a good idea to make my steering wheel detachable. The cheapo units on eBay are only $16, but the cheapest wooden steering wheel I could find was Mountney. The steering wheel was 6 bolts on 101mm and the quick release is 6 x 70mm. While there are adapters, they all bolt to the back of the steering wheel, adding even more additional column length. Since the Mountney horn buttons I found looked kinda cheap and the adapters seemed poorly designed AND the cost of the two together would have been about $70 USD, I decided to buy a $8 chunk of aluminum and a $6 horn button and make one myself. Here is the result (still waiting on the steering wheel). Should finish up the polishing a bit more, but am calling it for today. I'll add more pics once the wheel comes in.
