Just to clarify, re-programming is needed when one of the components is changed, MEMS2J ECU(MPi), 5AS immobilizer or key fob.
Re-setting is needed when the car battery dies or is disconnected or the battery is changed in the key fob. This is done by pressing the fob button rapidly multiple times.

Yep was not sure if they were or not.

Same procedure when the car battery goes dead or is disconnected.

I am told..  on my MGF it had four digit code to reset the alarm.. say number was 8649..  you turn off and one  eights times.. then on and off six times..  then on and off 4 times and then lastly on and off 9 times.. . I could NEVER get this to work.. so had to buy the re program chip to reset my alarm.. understand same alarm in MPIs as the Mk1 MGF.. ( pre 2001..) in sunny  IRELAND yet for IMM ??

Not sure if the MPI is different to the spi Mini's but as long as the remote is good and has good batteries in it you can usually reprogram them. Try doing this:

Make sure the car battery is fully charged and the remote key fob batteries are good.
Sit in the car with the trunk, hood and doors all closed (all these have sensor switches).
Turn on the ignition switch to the on position.
The red alarm light should be on on the dashboard.
Press and release the alarm re set button on the remote key fob usually between 12 and 20 times or until the red alarm light on the dash goes out.
If it does not re set remove the negative terminal from the battery and leave it disconnected for 30 minutes to re set everything then re connect the battery and try again.
Be sure to supply a battery source to the car with either jumper cables or a battery boost box when removing the battery after as this will keep everything programmed.

hi carlos.. try. www.remotekey.co.uk   I just got a program for my MGF .. which I imported as parts..   cost is 74 quid. about $110 . comes with key FOB..  takes about 2 mins to re program..   I have used them also for MPI minis.. later bc www.montecarlomini.com

Hi, I have a classic Mini (2000);  when I change the battery to one of the key remotes, it lost its programming.  I am base in Monterrey Mexico, and went to the Mini Dealer and they have no idea on how to re-program the remote, because is a classic mini.  My car was imported from England.  Since I am using the other remote, I am carrying the risk of having just one, because if the same happen to this one, I will not be able to drive the car, because the engine gets blocked.  I would greatly appreciate anybody's help on how to re-program the key remote.  Regards.  Carlos Jacks
