Your terminology defeats me.....I removed the bolts from one end of the laminated strips in order to remove the steel backing plate. When I put the new clutch plate in (only fits one way!), I made sure the pressure plate was bolted on in the same position it came off. Am I missing something?

Yes it is that stiff, you could never just pull on the arm to operate the clutch.

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

Did you separate the drive steps from the flywheel?

My rebuilt engine started beautifully, running smoothly with a nice idle and almost 100 lbs oil pressure with the choke on. All went well until I attempted to push the clutch in. A very hard pedal followed by smoke and a smell of burnt clutch fluid as the rubber hose between slave cylinder and hard line gave way. Interestingly, even with this damaged hose disconnected from the slave cylinder, the pedal was still hard to push as I attempted to empty the system of fluid. I am guessing that the rubber hose is blocked. I will order a stainless hose and also a new slave cylinder (the old one looks corroded at the top of the bore). I was surprised that even with a long lever, I was unable to move the clutch arm (a bit of paranoia kicking in as I have replaced the clutch). Common sense tells me that it is unlikely that I have a bad hose AND somehow messed up the installation but....

I did set the gap at the stop to the recommended 20 thou. but is the clutch action REALLY so stiff the actuating arm (pre-verto clutch) cannot be moved without the hydraulics?
