I feel your pain. The problem is that most if not all toggle switches are designed to install on a about a 3/8" panel, tops. It's because of the way the pivot on the switch handle works. The switch would have to have a very short throw if the pivot was any deeper in the shaft. I do remember seeing some long shafted toggle switches many years ago that had some military aircraft application, but they had to use a double pivot with a connecting rod inside the shaft, and I seem to remember they didn't hold up very well. Your best bet is to pocket out the back of the wood with a forstner bit and put a thin flat washer behind the wood to add some strength. Best done on a drill press with a depth stop, NOT with a hand drill. Ask me how I know this. 

Putting switches into a Rokee dash. Standard switches are too short. Does anyone have a source for classic style switches designed for a thicker dash? I know I can relieve the back of the dash with a router if I need to. Thanks.
