minimans.. the 300 TDI are NOT legal in the USA.. as they are NOT 21 years and older.. real can of worms here in NC> with DMV as ALL cars must have OEM year engine to pay NC safety and emissions..   as Dr Aaron about what happens here in NC.  when you swap to 300 TDI...  from petrol..  each state is different.. so I just leave the OEM engine and tranny.. later bc

Unless it's been up dated with a 200 or 300 TDI. these are great trucks and a good one will be able to be driven as a daily driver but not on the freeway unless it has the optional overdrive fitted. If your after a good daily driver then you need a Defender 110 not a 109 which that is. I have owed and driven all sorts from series one to defender TD5's and I loved them all in there quirky little ways but as said don't expect a modern type driving experience! If you thought a mini was basic transport then it will seem like a Rolls-Royce compared to a series land rover!!
I stand corrected on the Series.......I was trying to look at the thumbnail on my phone earlier
In any case, yeah, unless it's a 300tdi, it'll be a dog and most everything else is as previously stated.(more or less)
I loved my Series I, but it was not for the highway or city. (I live way out in the country and even then, the faster farm tractors
around here would try and pass me !

p.s.- They are loud and smelly,. No A/C or defroster to speak of.  That appears to be a Series I as well, so in all probability does NOT have a syncromesh transmission.  You need to know how to double clutch to shift it PROPERLY.

As a large RHD vehicle in the USA, I wouldn't drive it.  Especially once the rear tarp is installed.  Visibility will be poor to very poor.

No shoulder seat belts.  Everything is metal inside.

I'd never drive one in a city or highway.

IE: Rural only.

I used to tell the guys at work it felt like I would be able to drive up the side of a house with it, but it's not suited for the driving you do in your modern car, nor faster modern roads.

Oh, and you can't have it in 4WD and drive on pavement with it.

...but they look cool.  If you live on a ranch, farm, waaaaay out in the country, you'll love it.

and...people get really PO'd driving behind you as you toss oil on them and won\t get out of their way.

It's not a Mini.

I had a 61 (Series I) for a few yrs but am no expert.
They tend to rot out in the frame and the firewall, as most of the rest of Land Rover is Bermabrite (a type of Aluminum alloy)

Look at the rear spring shackles, the firewall, and especially around where the transfer case is mounted.

They are simpler to work on  than Minis and the small 4 banger gas engine (usually, don't buy the old diesel versin as it's gutless) is quite reliable and parts are widely available.

Don't expect it to do more than 55mph, downhill with a tailwind, while drafting an 18-wheeler.
0-60.never
0-55, probably the same day

Looking at a land rover tomorrow, any suggestions of what and where to look? I have no experience with land rovers.
