I have used noise canceling headphones for 5 years while driving my mini, and my even-noisier riding mower. Helps at any rpm.
They work well for 4 cycle engines. But they do not help for 2 cycle weed-eater or chainsaw. Must be the number of power strokes
(twice as many with 2 cycle at same rpm) and not enough time for headphone to respond/adapt/recover.
For example at 5000 rpm, 4 cycle had 2500 explosions, 2 cycle has 5000.
So that means in 60 seconds, the headphones must respond every 60/2500=0.024 sec,
but with 2 cycle every 60/5000=0.012 sec

Well, actually, noise cancelling headphones use a 'predictive' technology so they really only work on steady state continuous noise.
I find that my (obviously old school) Bose (on/off switch only) make the radio much clearer because they remove the steady engine/road noise leaving any extraneous sounds .. like music, speech or waa waa sirens more obvious..

Yea it's illegal to drive with headphones on because you can't hear the police or firetruck's siren. But Let's ask minerva , he used to be a highway patrol officer.
That earphones are a must for all Vtec owners. ,,,, vtec minis are loud and are attention seekers.
But before i use these earphones, ear plugs etc, i'd investigate first why my car is noisy, maybe there's some internal problems or need some oil.

I thought they might be illegal to use too, and they may well be. I've not been shy about police and Highway Patrol officers; they've clearly seen me. We shall see...
EDIT: Just Googled it. Yep, it's illegal (in CA) to have both headphones/earplugs on/in both ears. One ear is apparently OK. It says it's illegal to use a "hands free" phone too. What's up with that?

Rosebud is LOUD. Inside and out. I don't mind the exhaust noise, although I suspect my neighbors might. In fact I rather like it. From 3500 to 5000 RPM when it's "on the cam," the exhaust note has a pleasant old school, almost Jag-like rasp. Unfortunately, the exhaust competes with a cacophony of rattles, clanks and harmonic buzzes from under the bonnet and throughout the cabin.
I seldom drove without these foam earplugs from 3M. They worked great. I would roll them into a needle-point and shove them into my ear canal as close to my brain as I could get them. As they began to expand I was transported into world of silence. I found my shift points more by feel than by sound. Until now.
Enter noise-canceling cordless WiFi headphones. I tried both Bose and Sony's high-end offerings for a day. Although they were about the same price, I was initially biased toward the Bose. Bose is a great company; they claim that 100% of their profits go back into acoustic research. Sony is, well... Sony.
The quality and fit is about the same for both units. The effectiveness of the noise canceling circuitry is also about the same as is the music quality, at least up to and including 192 kbit/s for MP3 files, and also phone call quality; the same.
Here's where they part company. The Bose has old fashioned button and toggle switch controls requiring you to fumble around finding the correct buttons for on/off, noise canceling, phone call functions, pause, fast forward/reverse, etc. The Sonys have one power ON button and the rest of the controls require simple tap and swipe gestures on the surface of the right side of the headphones. Sony wins!
More about noise canceling. In a word: unbelievable! Press the ON button and Rosebud becomes a Honda Civic. The exhaust noise is reduced by 90% and the rattles and clanks disappear. These headphones have transformed my driving experience.
