Waverider,

You are about to head off down a very dark and expensive rabbit hole but it is possible to come out the other side.  My counsel is to do loads of research before you make one deal or buy one thing.  I wrote a pile of articles for this Mini Mania about restoring a '67 1275 like yours.  What an idiot I was/am.  Find 'articles' then keyword Snarkey.  The trick is to know beforehand how 'rebuilt' you want it to be.

I'm curious, what color is the smoke emanating from your exhaust?  White?  Grey?  Black?  Do you know if the tranny is the original 22G333?  That would explain metal in the sump.  They all do that.  And a couple of common wear parts in the tranny are a bitch to find. The guy to rebuild your twin carbs is Joe Curto near NYC. Google him.

Good luck and pick your battles carefully   A genuine S is worth it!

Thanks for this. Would you trust local or go with reputable and ship/crate? (seven, mini mania etc). I would also like it painted etc. And yes it is a twin carb setup so I guess I need to get prices on rebuild or new so thanks for the contact at Burlen, I sent them an email. For now all I need is to get the carb done so it's running for the British Invasion event in Stowe Vermont then next year get the motor work done. A lottery win would be good right about now!

Hi thewerewolf,
I'm a Brit bloke living in Saratoga, NY. The mini is blowing a bit of smoke and now I've been told the carb needs rebuilding, I'm more of a bodywork guy and need to have all work done on the motor etc. My goal is to keep the original motor if possible, keeping the numbers etc in tact and would be prepared to crate and ship it to have the work done. The nice thing is the motor is original and hasn't been messed with. Oh , the tranny may need reconditioning to as a small bit of metal was found in the sump.

I shot him an email last night, have not heard back. I just completed a 60 850 build, have a 1293 and a 1400 in the works. Pre assembled 1293 this week to measure piston to deck, returned to machine shop for surface cut to set C/R.

This past year I have lost my body and paint guy, as well as my interior guy. These were people I have worked with for the last 40 years. Giving thought to down sizing and doing only engine /tranny work as well as sub frames complete.

I have three Cooper S engines of my own, in fact my driver is S powered. I work with 4 different auto machine shops to get the best results. I ran an auto machine shop for 25 years but since I retired changes mean finding the best equip and people running it. Steve (CTR)

Profile says Saratoga NY, so the West Coast suggestions are probably no good.

CooperTune (Steve) will probably pop up, and he's pretty good down in VA, not sure about the NY, PA area.

BC is smoking skunk poop again.

You can't buy a good running 1275 engine for under $1K, and especially not an S motor.

There are several reputable builders. Our host is one. MiniComp in Coasta Mesa used to be the rebuilder for MiniMania many moons ago. They are still in business independently. Heritage Garage, also in Costa Mesa, is another reputable builder of high quality motors.  Seven Enterprises in Auburn, CA is another reputable rebuilder. Jet Motors in Oregon is yet another option. And then there is APT in Riverside, CA.

Prepare to pay a minimum of $2000 just in parts and machine work to rebuild yours and probably more along the lines of $3K not counting labor for assembly and install.

Hi, I have a 66 mini Cooper s and want to have the engine, tranny and carbs rebuilt. Any advice on recommendations of who would be best to do the work and also the best way to go about it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Neil.
