Mehmood, I suggest you start your own thread so your request isn't buried in a non-related thread.

I just bought a 1974 Mini Cooper Classic.  I am located in Connecticut and am looking for a restoration shop on the eats coast that is reliable and reasonably priced.  Any suggestions would be very welcome

Thanks a Million

Thanks for all the great information.

Just to add, the car is currently registered.
Would that still make it illegal?

I will reconsider my offer.

Thanks again.

If you know it's illegal going in please don't seek sympathy here if things go South.
Yes, since it's registered now it's less likely to throw red flags. Maybe you like living on the edge,  I don't know.
Much sage advice has been bestowed upon you.
Only thing I would change is run, do not walk away.
You already felt there was a problem with the gauges straight ahead instead of center location.
Go with your gut.

as mentioned above... run.

Listen to those with experience I think everybody who's responded to you has better than 10 or 20 years experience. I'm at your 39 and werewolf it's got to be that long or more. Like KD and mini Mike and dr. Mini these guys have all seen it before don't get involved.

rowfour.. ok. here are the two mini clubman that your were looking at on www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C900225 and www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C902651  . might ask the arm chair experts what you are going to find in better condition and legit PRE 76 Minis..  for under 5000 quid.. btw.  everyone uses AA inspections or Societe de General for car inspection if buying SIGHT UNSEEN.. they both check vin numbers against the V 5 red ( UK TITLE) check for rust and check to make sure the cars runs and drives properly..  SHipping to west coast is about $1750.. expect $1k in CBP duty , bond and entry. and inland freight ( picking up the car and then taking to southampton uk .. and inspection another $1.5k..  later bill cox  [email protected]

rowfour,

where do you live?  What state?  Someone nearby might contact you if you fill out that basic info in your profile. No need for your address.

If you're paranoid, put in a town near where you live.

I appreciate all the info, thank you.

I'm taking all of this into consideration.
I'm not risking a cent for a guranteed loss.

Well not really clean now is it. Title lists it as a 1968 but we all know it is not a 1968. If you are good with the murky background of this Mini then buy it. You seem to be the type that asks advise and only listens to what you want to hear.

It's still a real Mini and looks to be in decent shape. Being a later Mini there a few nice upgrades over a genuine early car like the roll up windows. It will be just as much fun to drive as a 1968. Having said that there is another point to consider ... in like for like condition a true 1968 will be worth more than a 1980-1990 something Mini. Are you paying the right purchase price for the actual year of this Mini?

How about your insurance company. Will they care about the year issue if discovered after making a claim?

So if you are ok buying something that is not as advertised jump in with both feet. It's going to be a gamble on your part. California resident or not I would not go down this path.

"ML" is MiniGuy you can find him at www.miniguy.com

Please if you do buy this Mini and you bump into another classic owner don't call it a 1968. Refer to it as a Mk4 or whatever Mk it truly is.
