get yourself about 16 feet of lamp cord wire or speaker wire . attach four alligator clips to all ends. now you can test things from the battery. essential mini tools.

California is a big state. if you are in the cooler parts, probably rarely comes on. But if you are in the hotter parts, it would be much more worth it. I'd look for an original, but whatever you do, make sure you can mount it so it pulls the air out with the way it spins.

As I remember, there is supposed to be a sensor on the radiator or thermostat adapter, that is also wired thru the ECU, but since my radiator came from a different year, I didn't have it, so I wired mine to one of my extra switches on the dash. I turn it on if the oil temp gets too high (easier to see my oil temp than the little water temp needle).

Depending on how hot it is where you live the spi fan usually only comes on at red lights or when sitting still for prolonged lengths of time unless you have an a/c equipped Mini. The factory SPI fan is quite expensive but any aftermarket electric fan around 10 inches in size will work as long as you don't care about originality.

There is a thermostatic switch on the front bottom of the radiator. Test this first before writing off the fan. Pull the two wires off of the switch and connecting them together with the ignition turned to on position. If the fan comes on then it's the switch that is faulty. If not you will need to start looking further back. There is a relay on the bulkhead that you can also check.

Hello, I drive a SPI 1992 daily, LHD, originally built for the German market. My electric fan, located in the inner wing of the driver side, failed due to motor burn out. Is it possible that the fan is connected to the ECU. I don't have a manual switch. I haven't found a fan to replace it yet. Any idea? Is it worthwhile to replace it? Thank you for your help!
