You can also heat wrap your exhaust.  My friend's always joke about it smelling like toast until it has burnt the smell off.

without the heat shield, your carpet inside the car might melt or catch fire. Surely it will melt the latex that holds the carpet bound.

Don't drive around with out it. You could fashion one with some aluminum flashing.

That’s right, only because of the brick inside the can.

I took my cat off. I discovered the shield was broken off in one corner. I'm thinking now of removing the entire shield. I'm assuming they put the shield there because the cat gets hotter than a reg exhaust pipe.

Do you want the whole cat or the metal shield that goes around it?  Or the soft exhaust shielding that is attached to the car?  I've got an entire cat with metal shield for free if you need it.  I will include the collector pipe also, the flex joint is still OK but has scrape marks and tears.  Pick up in or around Everett Washington.  Or if there are any members on here that can help pass the parts along you two can work it out.
