The shifter is a rod change style, not a cable style. So if the motor is moving front and back because of bad motor mounts, it is possible it is messing with the shifter throw not allowing it to engage gears properly or fully.

It is also possible you have a bad clutch friction disc, bad clutch hydraulics, incorrectly adjusted stop nut on the clutch arm (unless you have a verto style-- not sure if those were in the 84 mayfair in Japan at that point).

You could also have a cv joint that has popped out of either the outer portion of the drive flange because the nut came loose or from the inner pot joint from the transmission.

Your inner pot joint could also have popped apart from the inner (torn boot on inner cv and you'd see it physically disengaged). Or your inner axle could have popped out from the inner or outer cv joint.

There are many possibilities and a combination of the above could be at play--   you'll need to report back more details.

I just bought a 1984 Austin Mini Mayfair here in Japan. The seller told me that it needed new engine mounts and that was the reason whu it was bad at shifting while driving but smooth while stationary. So on the way to a garage for the base inspection, the vehicle ended up stalling out while at a stop sign. After messing with the engine for a while, I got it started up again. Then while I was on an incline and put the vehicle in neutral as there was traffic, but once traffic started moving again, it would not activate once I put it into gear, just kept revving up the engine and rolled backwards. My buddy who was following me threw on his hazards and helped push the vehicle up the hill and into a parking lot. He noticed three oil puddles on the asphalt when we were pushing. He also said there was smoke coming out of the exhaust when I shifted. It feels like first gear is messed up because when I put it into first, the gear stick has a lot of play unlike the other gears. Otherwise it feels like it seats properly but when I go to give it gas, the car doesn't move. This is my first experience with Minis and just looking for some help!!
