When the first Sprites and Midgets went to the cross flow radiators, a few things changed. For US cars, the thermostat housing (now of cast iron instead of aluminum) was pointed toward the left and included a mounting boss for the smog pump. Also, the two-piece  metal radiator fans were replaced with yellow plastic units. While these fans were first used from 1968 onwards, they will fit earlier cars, too!

The impeller in these aluminum bodied pumps is long lasting cast iron, not cheaper stamped steel as in many aftermarket pumps. Use of a high capacity water pump helps to reduce cavitation in the water jacket, particularly at high RPM, as well as circulating a greater volume of coolant. (this is a good thing)
