The term 'hydro' in the renowned Cooper "S" suspension system "Hydrolastic" means at least in part a liquid. This famous system was designed by BMC and made for a smoother and more fluid ride while taking all of the abuse of off road rallying. It is not uncommon for some of us to say that the "wet" suspension Minis were the best riding Minis ever. Unlike the more common rubber cones that need periodic replacement- the only thing needed to keep a 'hydro' car up to snuff is "Hydro-Fluid"! The offical proper fluid is made by Morris and comes in a one gallon container- more than enough for either a complete re-do or routine maintenance!
Suitable for all hydrolastic suspended Minis.

Question:
Do you pump up the hydrolastic suspension directly with pump and fluid? But do I need any kind of valve to bleed the air out? Also with the light weight smaller hand pump does it take several pumps to raise the car body? I know it should be about 12 5/8 from wheel center.
Answer:
Yes, the fluid is similar to engine coolant and it gets pumped into the system with a large pump: https://www.minimania.com/part/TOOL01/Classic-Austin-Mini-Pump-Hydrolastic-With-Gauge

Or the little ones we sometimes have: https://www.minimania.com/part/TOOL01-SMALL/Classic-Austin-Mini-Hydrolastic-Fluid-Pump--Small-Lightweight-Version
Not sure how many pumps it takes as I've never done it myself. No, there shouldn't be air in the system so no bleeding. I believe the large pump evacuates the system first and then fills the system.

You'll want to check the forums and YouTube and see hoe this is done. The MG 1100/1300/Austin Americas all were hydrolastic and there's likely folks who've made videos about the process.
