New car from Peugeot 'could rival TT and Scirocco'

Fans of the stylish Audi TT may be interested to hear about a new car from Peugeot that Auto Express claims could rival its popularity.

According to the magazine, the French auto manufacturer has announced the launch of its 308 RC Z coupe and that as well as being in competition with the TT on its arrival is expected to go "head-to-head with Volkswagen’s all-new Scirocco".

Equipped with the 1.6-litre turbo engine from Mini's Cooper S - which offers around 170bhp - and a platform based on Peugeot's original 308 hatchback it is noted that the car may be intended as a throwback to one of the manufacturer's more memorable cars.

"Top brass at Peugeot are hoping that introducing the 308 RC Z will help improve the firm's image among young buyers, just as the 205 GTi did in the early '80s," the magazine notes.

It is thought the car could be available to car loans customers in summer 2010 with a price tag of £17,500.

The Peugeot 205 GTi is still celebrated today with owners clubs and sites such as 205gtidrivers.com attracting fans.
