I've already got a small stack of bare 12G206 head castings... but they're used and at minimum need to be cleaned up and crack tested. Yeah, the NOS 12G295 is in red primer with guides fitted. I guess I'll have to see how well I can negotiate. cheers, Jim

A few years ago (I'm talking 20 or so) there were hundreds of these bare 295's kicking around in the UK. They were from a stock cleans done in BL Belgium when it closed down. I suspect that the one you have is surfaced and has the guides fitted and is finished in a sort of red oxide paint colour. If it is then I think $200 is a very fair price for a brand spanking new head casting, as has already been pointed out you will have to source the other bits, but the only things that could cause problems are the 1.21" inlets which are NLA (in the UK at least). Still the valves won't be that difficult to source. You could get yourself a completely brand new 998 Cooper cylinder head, as fitted to 998 Coopers, MG1100's, but not early 948 sprites (this was the 202 casting with 1.1 & 1" valves fitted) for under $400 Anyone who doesn't think this is cheap nowadays needs their bumps feeling. I would snap the guys hand off if I was you! M.

When all is said and done....is originality important? ...as a 997 wouldn't have used a 295 would it? Did they not use the 185 (or 202/206) If you were to use a bare NOS 295 on your 997, you would have to have the head skimmed .080" or so anyway to get the right compression...... A FATHER CARRIES PICTURES WHERE HIS MONEY USED TO BE 1130cc, 12g295, SW5 cam, LCB, HIF38, CA spec.

I don't think $200 for bare NOS 295 head is unreasonable, but you have to wonder if you really need a NOS head or not considering you do have to purchase the rest of the components. dan "I don't know much, but what I do know I know little of "

Depends on the need, If I needed it maybe, since I don't I wouldn't pay that much. Maybe $100 Thank You in advance! Stieve Grumpy: I'm bettin' The Joker told you to kill me soon as we loaded the cash. BOZO;The Joker: No no no no, I kill the bus driver. Grumpy: Bus driver? What bus driver?

worth is subjective. The head is and has been NLA for many years. A bare head means you have to come up with the rest - valves, springs, caps, etc. which can be several hundred dollars. The 998 Cooper used the '295 as did the MG1100 and I also believe it was found on early Sprites. How "bare sheet of paper" is it? Does it at least have guides installed? In the used market I've seen a complete 12G295 sell on eBay for $125.00. I've also known of a complete '295 being sold for $25.00 - he had to remove it from the MG1100 which also gave him the valve cover and rocker assembly. The Sprite vintage racers like that head as well as the small bore Mini crowd. Today I can see where a couple of hundred for a blank 295 head would be reasonable.

this is just the bare head casting. It's being called "a blank sheet of paper"... as it's never been built/run/trashed. It's being offered for a bit more than $200.. is it worth it? Cheers, Jim

I'm looking at a NOS bare 12G295 head casting for my 997 Cooper, and the obvious question is, what's a fair value for the thing? It's still the original BL box. TIA Jim
