To missquote a famous statesman: "Drive a small car, but carry a big horn..."
On the few occasions that I have unleashed either the bullhorn or the klaxxon at unwary idiots, the result has been priceless.
Autozone (I think) do a fantastic compact twin tone airhorn that looks like a std Mini horn - except that it has 130odd Db !! Well worth the $49.95. Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

I probably wouldn't commute in Tampa in a Moke, so I voted no. I do commute in a Mini often and had done so for 3 years straight without problems. Without A/C I figue that's Mini dedication. However, what is "unecessary risk"? Life is for living. Somethings make you feel more alive than others. Enjoy. You don't want to be on your deathbed in the nursing home wishing "If I had only....." Do what pleases you. Nod politely when others tell you how you should live your life. Then, do as you please. No one has any guarantee of how many hours they have left. Enjoy each one as it comes. Moke on, Quick!

I am on top of maintenance, I drive like I am riding a motorcyle and pretend that "they" can't see me. I give signals before I change lanes (some may argue that it is not prudent to do so in DFW area) and I even add hand signals when appropriate (not finger signal). So what says ye, is it an unacceptable risk to commute in the Moke? Am I the only one doing as such in NA? |
Its against the law in N.Z and germany to change lanes without indercation. On the German autobahns speeding was never an offence, but they punished severly for being in the wrong lane(fastest on the inside slowest on the outside) and not indercating when changing lanes. Also if you were rear ended it was the person in fronts fualt for not pulling over for the faster vehicle.(should always check your mirrors every ~10seconds, befor slowing, befor turning and after every turn into a new street) there is now speed limits on ~90% of the autobahn. They didnt preach "stay at a safe speed" because if everyone is self aware, aware of everyone else and soley focused on driving, any speed is a safe speed. And I agree. Everyone should learn to ride a motorcycle/scooter before they drive a car, because it teaches you to look out for yourself and everyone else. Because if you dont, your as good as DEAD. SUVs should be for offroad use only or classed as small trucks, pay the levies and the driver should have the proper small truck liscence. [~ = approximate fore those of you who dont know.] People are like slinkeys; they dont really serve a purpose but you cant help laughing when one falls down the stairs.

Hey TJ, got my turn signals and flashers working, so commuting everyday legally is very possible now. However, just like riding a motorcycle, you gotta be careful. At least in a Mini, the emergancy crew won't have to look very far for my body....... The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After The Sweetness of Low Price Is Forgotten ! Yes. Therefore you should sell me your Moke at a skinflint price. And then I can take the unacceptable risk. Seriously. I don't really see my saloon as being much safer than a Moke and I'd drive my car pretty much anywhere. Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything. Charles Kuralt Autox/Rallyx Videos

I guess it comes down to what is "unecessary risk" and what is "acceptable risk". I would not show my wife the photos of the wrecked Mokes we have seen posted in the last year. If I did, she would never let the kids ride in one. There is always risk. The golden bb could come out of nowhere and get you. The less cage you have around you, the more risk you take. Be it a saloon car, a Californian with a full cage, or an open Moke. Have fun, but be careful! mtgibby "Democracy is two wolfs and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. My father always tells me it is too dangerous to drive in a mini. I tell him two things: 1) It is too small to hit 2) I drive fast to minimize the odds of getting hit. Spend less time in one spot thus less likely to get hit. He thinks I am nuts.. He's probably right Never put off till tomorrow what you can avoid all together.

Drove up the valley to Mission twice in the last two days (100 miles combined). I'm bright "yellow" with all lights on and one turkey turned into green light traffic from a red light as if I didn't exist...we just have to be prepared for the "I am bigger" folks who act accordingly. Reminds me of university days when my car pool mate drove an '48 Chrysler with bumpers that must have weighed as much as a Moke. He was hoping to get a job crushing motorist morons. In reality, he got in on the ground floor of the McDonald's restaurant chain development in Canada. No he never wore the Ronald suit. Moke away! Mini friends! Mini rides! I've always thought that I wanted an Aussie Californian simply for the nifty roll bar. Then I realized what the roll bar is bolted too, and gave up on having to have one (but on not having a Moke). Quickie, my opinion is "screw 'em all" - drive what you want to drive. (said from someone who drove his mini to work today) Steve You will learn more about Minis by driving one for 30 minutes than if you read every book written about them.

Do you think Hummer drivers are taking a risk they may injure someone in the several blind spots? I feel strongly that if everyone drove minis, we would all be safer. If it was between Sherman tanks and Hummers, I bet the Bummers would be taking a risk.
I would not NOT drive a Moke because of the risk. I'm just not a Moke person. I would however drive a mini every day if I could.

What if you got run over by a supertanker? Those things take miles to stop. You'd be crushed. Or a 747 cargoliner!!! one million one hundred thousand pounds takeoff weight. Those nits who think they are safe in a Hummer need a reality check.
