After boardroom discussons this afternoon, BMW spokesman Mike Mchale announced that British investment group Alchemy would take control of current Mini production at Longbridge, but plans to cease manufacture of the Mini later this year would remain. Alchemy will become responsible for supplying parts for the current Mini. In response to questions about the possiblity of Alchemy continuing production of the current Mini, Mchale replied: "I doubt it. The same legislation that stopped us making the car hasn't changed, so I'd say it's unlikely." Concerning the new Mini, production will move to the BMW Cowley plant. Production will also be set back two to three months, for an esxtimated launch date of early Summer 2001.
