I just want to extend a big thank you for your sponsorship of the SoCal Mini Day and Blood Drive that took place on October 29th, 2006. Thanks in part to your generous donation towards our raffle, we raised approximately $2,000 in cash and $500 in supply donations. This was divided evenly between two charities: The Bethune Transitional Center for Homeless Students and the Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center. In addition, several pints of blood were donated to the Red Cross by many of the participants.
The Mary McLeod Bethune Transitional Center for Homeless Students is a program that provides academic, health and social services to homeless children in the Long Beach area. The Bethune program prepares needy children for school enrollment with academic and social services, such as giving immunizations and securing necessary enrollment documents. Other services available to the students include laundry, hot meals and physical & mental health assessments.
The mission of the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center is to educate the public about man's impact on the environment, especially fragile coastal wetlands, and to mitigate that impact through care and rehabilitation of native wildlife. The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center rescues animals, such as injuries caused by oil spills, and rehabilitates them for release back in to their natural environments. In addition, they have a teen education program in which future generations learn the importance of responsibly sharing our environment with others.
As a co-organizer of this event, the most satisfying moment came when I received an email from a fellow Mini owner who’s daughter heard about what we were doing and wanted to learn more about helping charities. She soon recruited two Brownie Scout troops who came together to donate two carloads of very much needed supplies to the Wildlife Center! If this isn’t a testimonial on how we can have a positive impact on others while having fun, then what is? On behalf of myself, my co-organizers, and the children and animals you helped, thank you!
