STEPHEN BYERS, the Trade and Industry Secretary, will today hold talks with John Towers, the former Rover chief executive who is leading the Phoenix bid for Rover. The meeting is to update the Government on the talks between Phoenix and BMW. It is the latest in a series of talks initiated by Mr Byers as the Government attempts to support Phoenix, which promises to safeguard volume car production at Longbridge. It is not clear if Mr Towers will call for a clear financial commitment from the Government. So far he has not done so but government cash backing is being seen as crucial. Separately, Rover won applause for production times yesterday. The ten-day production time for its 75 car is the best in Europe, according to Warwick Business School.
