This ’69 Austin Mk2 Mini has been chopped and channeled – much like an old school hot rod – by a master craftsman/fabricator in Southern California with 40 years’ experience in restoration and custom builds of exotic and race cars. It’s powered by a Mincomp performance 1380cc atop a 4-speed, 4-synchro manual transmission. This custom Mini was built as a labor of love
over a 10-year period and now has roughly 2,000 miles on it.

Featured in November 2006 Mini Magazine.

At first glance, it’s reminiscent of the “Mini Sprints” built in the ’60’s, but this one’s a full-custom, one-off build. There’s 2" chopped from the bottom of the body and doors, and a 3" chop of the roof. All body panels are steel; there is no fiberglass, no plastic. The cut-down side windows (including the sliding windows in the doors) are tempered glass; the front and rear windscreens are laminated safety glass.

(re: HEADROOM: For notes regarding sufficient Headroom and Forward Vision, see notes and Video below.)

The unique color is Mazda “Mariner Blue” – chosen to match its period California blue-and-yellow plates.

The steering is Left-hand-drive (LHD).

Engine Bay and Custom Features:

The rebuilt performance engine is a Mincomp 1380cc with an aluminum cylinder head and lightened flywheel. The manual transmission is a 4 speed, four-synchro “rod shift” (stronger, smoother-shifting) model. Heavy-duty engine steadies have been fitted. There is a Weber 45 carburetor on an alloy intake manfold; an LCB header feeds the custom exhaust system, relocated muffler and the chrome center-exit exhaust tip. The original charging system has been upgraded to an alternator. An oil cooler has been added. Upgrades to the cooling system include a custom radiator, a custom radiator shroud that helps direct air through the radiator for extra cooling, as well as a custom-built coolant recovery tank. An alloy rocker cover has been fitted; the oil filler has been relocated to provide extra clearance. The battery is a small, dry-cell type that has been relocated to under the rear seat and the custom-fabricated fuel tank holds 10 gallons.

Brakes and Suspension:

The front brakes have been upgraded to Cooper S (7.5") disc brakes. The car’s “hydrolastic” (aka: “wet”) suspension has been upgraded to (S Racer red) coil springs and GAZ adjustable shocks. The adjustable suspension includes Hi-Los. A rear sway bar has been added.

The Minilite-style (8-spoke) 10" alloys are fitted w/ Yokohama A008 rubber. The modified Wood & Pickett-style wheel arches (ie: flares) are done in body color, as are the side-view mirrors. (The Mk2 grille is standard height.) A small air dam is tucked under the front valance.

Interior Features:

The interior features a wood dash with twin gloveboxes, a wood shift knob and a GT sport steering wheel. The upholstery is done in gray, including the modified Recaro-style seats and matching gray door cards. The custom instrument panel holds a speedo, small tachometer, clock and oil-pressure and water-temperature gauges, and relocated toggle switches. There is a stereo system. A period Paddy-Hopkirk-style accelerator pedal is fitted. The front seatbelts are three-point retractable type. The odometer reads 69k miles; true mileage is unknown.
The full sunroof is a pull-back Webasto-style (Britax) type done in white vinyl to match the white roof.

Headroom, Entry/Exit and Forward Vision:
Concerned about headroom and easy of entry and exit?
Don't be! The headroom in this SprintMini is the same as a stock '67 Mini - about 4" of headroom!
* On a stock Mini, the front of the seat measures about 12" high. When seated, the 5'10" seller has 4" of headroom. (He is 5'10" and weighs 190lb.)
* On this Sprint Mini with its lowered roofline, the front of the seat is about 9" from the floor, but the seller's headroom remains at 4". (The front of the seat measures about 3" lower.)
* For comparison, in MiniGuy's '66 Cooper S, his period aftermarket "Paddy Hopkirk" seats also measure 12" from the front of the seat to the floor. Even at 6'4" (and 180lbs), MiniGuy still has about 2" of headroom!
* As far as forward vision, even with only 2" of headroom in MiniGuy's Mini, he has no problem seeing ahead or looking up to see traffic lights and signs. Because the Sprint Mini has an additional 2" of headroom (4" total), forward vision would be even better!

Notes and FYI:

* Body is all-steel
* Paint remains in excellent condition
* Cruises at freeway speeds without even breathing hard
* Recent maintenance included new valve guides.
* The Smiths speedo is not working.

Located in Michigan. Comes with its California license plates.
