"did the mini's load in the back of these someway? "

Here is an excerpt from Paul Stanworths' understanding of the history on these BMC Transporters-

Bus # BMC 34 found its' way to Abbington to be used as a transporter for two minis. The back was lengthened and a drop down tailgate was fitted, then painted Red/White with full BMC Comps graphics on it.Once again at any photo opportunity, BMC used these large vehicles to stand proudly behind their famous race/rally cars-

More to be posted on Pauls' research later-

If the current owner was a bit more realistic on price, I'd be extremely tempted as a vehicle for me, Suzy & Jim to rumble round in at shows !!

Thanks MeMe-

I purchased this Unit in June 2000 from the previous owner who had it for 27 years-I had previously owned the only other one from 1998 -2000 and it was sold and sent back to the U K for restoration by Mark Nolan -

On this unit, l did the restoration work my self as it came to me in an unflatering brown/cream colour-I pretty well left the seventies interior(orange shag) orange plaid upholstery alone as it was afterall ,period, time warp-

The outside had to be taken down to the bare aluminium skin and then prepped and painted the tri-colours of the Union Jack-I never had a picture of the original to work off but, one of the original factory drivers, said, "he almost fainted when he saw it restored" It apparently was pretty close to the original nine-

Some say there were 9, some 7, who knows, but only ever two LHD models in North America-

So, new tyres all around, new wiring thru-out , sealing to prevent water leaks, full brake job and that was prety well it- A small fortune on Brit flags and decals and there you have (had) it-

It was fun for the 5 years l owned it, it served me well, the 6 cylinder turbo Perkins powered diesel never quit-And it pulled the double trailer with two minis as if it wasn't there-It went to Texas and then moved on to California-

Below-

1st Pic/ at Mid Ohio race track in Sept at the SCCA Runoffs-My Cooper S and pick up on the trailer-

2nd pic/ at Watkins Glen N Y at the vintage races, Blue mini is now in Alabama and the yellow one is now wierd Eh's in New Brunswick-

3rd pic/Joe Huffaker, Outstanding mini race driver at the SCCA Runoffs in Mid Ohio, Sat nite, Ohio Mini Owners Chili party- Always a great time-

4th pic/ At home in front of my shop, with my 66 CooperS in the foreground, remember that car Scargo ?
5th pic/ Loaded and ready to roll to Mid-Ohio-

Enjoy the pics-

That is a pretty cool one. This is one of my favorites. I saw it at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart last year.

At the French Italian show at Woodley Park a few years back, I took these photos of a very rough Ferrari transporter. Haven't seen it since.

transporter fans should check out the Atlas F1 Nostalgia forum.  Its mostly UK/Euro stuff, but good threads there on transporters and commercial vehicles too.

I just read an article in the July Issue of Automobile Magazine about the 1960 Scarab transporter.

Here is a link.....

Yeah, I read an article recently about the remarkable runup in prices for vintage race car haulers.  Apparently the boys with the big bucks have bought up everything else that's collectable and driven the prices through the roof so now they're focusing on car haulers to complete their vintage racing fantasies.  I guess it's just the way of the world but it bugs me to see things priced out of the range of us mere mortals. I'm sure someone will buy it, pay someone else a bundle to restore it, and then we'll never see it again at a mini meet because it will be locked away in a garage or museum somewhere.   aaaah well.

We can fix that ... just need a blowtorch and more peanut butter.

Someone on the Bringatrailer site contacted the seller and posted his response. Looks like it could have been a good investment if it were to sell for what the auction house suggested!

"I am uncertain about the price as there is not much to use for comparison, I had been talking with Gooding & Co. about consigning it in their Monterey auction. Their opinion was that the reserve should be $125,000- $130,000. They thought it might bring more than this. I waited too long to get it in to the catalog and decided to hold off on consigning it. The only other example I have seen was in the UK and offered for 100,000 GB pounds. I am open to offers and may trade for something interesting."
