yes. Dumped out the box of distributor parts to see what I have, need to assemble a couple of 23D distributors.  Havent found problems with worn distributors, but yes I see wear on the housings, will have to clean up the backside of the 12A11366 distributor housings and wasnt sure of the clearance spec.

Seems logical to me = enough tolerance to prevent binding or heat seize but not enough to wobble, When the shaft or housing bushings get worn, the spark timing wanders. (Of course you may know that and are in the process of rebuilding s dizzy ) If you can feel play, it is likely worn.

resurrecting this old thread to ask, what is the spec for clearance between the distributor drive shaft and the distributor housing?  I found a spec for the older MGA at .004" to .006", and late Midget (Spitfire engine) at .003" to .007".  So I think the A-series must be similar.

If the engine is on the gearbox, make sure it is not rattling around in the bottom of the gearbox.  The A series drive can fall in, not likely but possible.

If it is in there, you would find it on startup, but that is not really the best time to locate it.

Thanks all- I dug thru my parts buckets and found a couple of drive shafts- one very nice- and the sleeve. With a new o-ring should be able to proceed!

NO, there are 2 dizzy driveshafts- A series, and A+.

They are not interchangeable- the lengths are different and the dog drive bit at top is different too.
850-970S-997-998-1071S-1098-all 1275 A series use the same driveshaft.

The picture Spitz included is for an A+ engine. You say you have an A series engine. I think the drive gears are the same but the distributor hold down is different between the two types of block. The distributor is held in by the clamp and bolt for the A+ engine shown the picture Spitz references. On the A series engine there is a flange that goes in the hole that bolts to the block and holds the drive in. The distributor attaches to the flange. See the previous page to the one Spitz references. All A series engines are the same, whether 850, 1000 or 1275. I am not sure, but I don't think there is an 850 A+ block, but all A+ engines woulld use the same pieces (except of course the MPI engines). Oh, and I think the actual distributor drive piece is the same for all engines, A or A+ just a difference in the way the distributor is hel in..

You are looking for a distributor drive gear. It has a gear that runs off the cam on the one end and a slot to drive the distributor on the other, not sure on the interchange ability with 850's.

I've never taken an A series engine down to the bare block. I bought a partially assembled 1300GT with fresh bore and pistons and a freshly done head. The cam and oil pump is in/ on- timing chain, all that. I am looking down in the hole where the distributor will go and theres nothing there. What am I looking for in my parts buckets? An adapter sleeve and a drive shaft or something? Will 850 parts be the same? Are there tollerances on these pieces? Any advice would be great, Charlie
