1098s CAN be made to rev, a friend built an 1152 motor with turbo years ago, it made 125HP at the wheels (~140 at crank on the engine dyno).
NOW, Russell Engineering here in Oz has seen 120HP @ 7500rpm [at crank] from an NA road 1220 motor (1098 bored to 68mm) with a 44IDF Weber on.
And it took full throttle from 1500 rpm with a slightly smaller cam.

I can provide a good 998 crank and bushed or press fit rods. My current driver is powered by a 1360 Cooper S engine. This engine carried me to a North East SCCA Solo 2, 3rd in class 1976.  South East SCCA Solo 2 first in class 1977. It also made it to top five in class several years National SCCA Solo 2. Being a little younger at the time I turned it to 9200. It is now red lined at 5000 rpm. I have geared my tranny to give 70 mph at 3000 rpm, 96 at 4000 and 115 at 5000. I have run it at 4000 for about 30 min. on the highway. I have not yet pushed it pass 4000 in fourth. I'm completing another power unit with the same tranny now and it has a better cam and 1 additional point of compression. Gone though the suspension brakes and new tires on freshly powder coated wheels. Plan to see if this one will pull 100 in high. My point is turning big RPM is not required to love a mini.

Thanks for sharing your budget with us. That has become the first question I ask when building a power unit for a customer.

I would suggest that with a budget of $1000 you won't get much beyond a running core motor, and certainly not one that will reliably rev beyond 6000rpm.

My +60 1098 revs to 6500, though there is little point as the fat torque band is much lower down.
You may be better off buying a 998 crank and some decent oversize 998 pistons and reusing what you have - the 998 & 1098 engine are identical other than the crank and pistons.

Sounds like Cosimo is your best bet in that price range for a full core motor:

//www.madhouseminis.com/contact.html

You may consider reusing your transmission, flywheel, etc and just getting a 1275 longblock. You should be able to find one within your budget that maybe "ran" but should be gone through. I've got some of those but, again, it's cost prohibitive with the shipping.

Revving past $6K consistently on anything is going to put a lot of stress on the valvetrain. You're wise to not want to do that too much with a 1098, but you are going to need to push some money at the valve springs and head setup.

Turbo 998's are fun. A complete 998 will be A LOT easier to find in your budget.

I've already got that covered, have the 7.5 cooper s disc brake conversion kit. That budget is for the engine.

in your budget, you should think seriously about brake up grades if you are not on S or 8.4 brakes. Drums on a turbo 1300

won't cut it.  I think you're gonna have to save some more $$ to get this off the ground.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Here's why I am looking for a new engine. I am aware that the 1098 is a good torquey engine, however I don't like the fact that it can't be revved above 6k.

I am looking to learn to rebuild an engine, hence I want one in decent condition so I don't throw myself into the deepest of ends.

From what I've seen, the 1098 has the fewest performance parts and upgrades and is not the best turbo candidate due to a weak crankshaft. Now yes, I can change to a stronger crank however with that money, I have heard people say it makes more sense to change to either a 998 or a 1275.

My budget is at max $1000, although I was hoping to spend far less by eventually either selling my 1098 or involving it in a trade with the engine I buy.

Lastly, my car is a 63 mini so I would need the candidate to be compatible with your car, and it must have a manual transmission.

Thanks!

If I might ask, are you looking or a plug and play power unit or just a rebuildable core engine. I have 998 short blocks which would require a complete rebuild to be useful. Engines as fitted to automatic trannys will not work on a std tranny with some machine work and adapters. I have a couple of 1275 bare blocks but their value seems to be on the rise. If you know what kind of budget you are working with we may be of more help. Steve (CTR)

So you are looking for a recent rebuild engine?  If not, why not keep the 1098...maybe the best all around A series.
Just a 998 with longer stroke..more torque

Here are a couple of options that are not too far from Troy. I would try contacting Cosimo, who used to own Mad House Minis in Cummington, MA. He used to have multiple Minis in various stages of restoration, and a garage full of engines. He has since moved on to raising beef cattle, but he may have an engine or two lying around. The last number I have for him is 413-634-0045. There is also a shop in Worcester, MA, called Greasy's Garage that does some restoration work on Minis. Website is www.greasysgarage.com. Ask for Pete or John.

Are you aware of the local MINI/Mini group in Albany called MPG (Mini Performance Group)? We meet up at the Albany Pump Station the first Tuesday of each month @ 7:15. The owner has a MINI, and the first round is always on the house. Friendly bunch of Miniacs, as we call ourselves...I led a rally last fall along the back roads of NY and MA in my Classic...tons of smiles per mile!

I have a 1275 pre A+ power unit, under 10Kmi since rebuilt. +.020 bore, mild cam. Remote shift mini transmission, yoke outputs, so it would likely be a drop-in unit for your existing axles but you'd need to make sure what style shifter you have (mini or America style). Distributer is included. You'll need to reuse your own starter, alternator, radiator, intake & exhaust and carburetor. $2200.

Biggest problem is you'd need to have it shipped from San Diego. I can put it on a 1/2 pallet and deliver it to the SAIA or YRC shipping docks to save on shippng costs.

my email is in my profile.

As a 63 I'd expect you have a remote shifter. The late power units have rod change shifters and pot joints. I currently have a MG Metro complete power unit. Just as removed after a cross country trip to have Honda power installed. We can place on engine test stand and run it before shipping. Could just as well rebuild to any level you'd like.

The one you may be interested in is a fully rebuilt and blue printed 1293cc 1275 GT. GT 11 stud block, bored, honed, cam bearings, brass freeze plugs and decked to give 10.2 to 1 CR. EN40B Cooper S crank, Cooper S rods, and HC pistons. New Kent billet 510 cam and lifters. 940 cyl head with Cooper S valve sizes and forged S rockers bushed, reprofiled and heat treated. Four synchro 1128 remote tranny with S /GT ratios and Hardy Spicer outputs. Side covers bushed and aligned honed. All new shafts, synchros, bearings and seals. New ring gear, flywheel surfaced as well as back plate. Clutch preload adjusted with new disc and presure plate. All throw out bits from TO bearing, plunger, arm, push rod and clevis pins new. Also includes remote Cooper style shifter. I also have correct starters and generators which I can send out for rebuild if interested. Of course you could have yours rebuilt and skip that. I can send a dizzy out for rebuild and recurve if you like. I can also provide any intake system you may like. Twin 1 1/4 SUs, single 1 3/4 SU HS6 or a HIF single or twin 1 1/2 SUs.

This unit was bored , balanced and blue printed for a very serious owner. Due to health issues he will not complete this project. Core purchase, new parts, machine work and labor placed this at $7000. all in. It has been run in on my engine test stand. Using Brad Peen break in oil it was run at 2000 to 2500 for twenty min. I'd like to think an offer at or around $6000. would move this along. My info is in my profile. Unit located in Hampton , Va.

Edit: GT power unit does not include starter, gen., dizzy or intake. Those are at additional cost.

Steve (CTR)

PS I also have a 998 auto and a 1275 auto power unit for sale. As well as two auto subframes. Late single bolt per side.

Hi guys,

I am looking to buy either a 998 or a 1275 engine for my 63 classic mini. I am based in troy NY, so the seller would have to be willing to ship, I'm willing to pay extra for that.

I have a 1098 a series block that is currently running in the car that I would be happy to trade + cash if necessary.

Interested in all offers.

Thanks!
