One more thing: NEVER use omega 3-6-9 in your SU carb. (May be ok in Fish carbs, though they are pretty rare these days.)

+1 to Debbie's advice. Treating any pet well is feeding them properly, not what they like best. That includes weight control. Our Rory has had a heart murmur for many years, a fast heart rate managed by  1/4 tablet of Atenolol and has been on a kidney issue diet for several. He's 17 and has arthritis issues for which he is now getting pain relief medication. That medication may cause kidney problems but the pain relief is necessary, and he's happier for it. It is my job to shove medication down his throat.

Thanks for that tuna and salt info Deb. Very much appreciated. I don’t give Lupin tuna at every meal as I figured it wouldn’t be good for her, but I didn’t know about the salt content. Also, she’s a full- figured girl already ( she LOVES to eat ) and I’m sure she’d be HUGE if I fed her tuna every day. I am always trying to treat her with the best care possible. I want her around for a long, long time. :-) Great info Deb; Thanks from me and Lupin.

Tuna guilt trip... our kitties love tuna water... be careful and only buy the no name tuna in the yellow can as it has less sodium... my vet said once in a while is okay but everyday is too much.
Our oldest cat Schmoozer had 2 ounces of tuna water everyday with kidney support gold to extend her life to a respectable 19 years and 2 months. She had to be put down because of heart failure not kidney failure in the end.

Thank you veggivet. Coopertune, this is very much an off-topic thread that I started ( perhaps I as the newbie that I am I placed it in the wrong spot ? ) and I think you post fits in fine FWIW. I actually can visualize your yard, as MY father had an old shed removed from his back yard a few years ago. Quite a mess afterwards, but we expected this ( it only had a earthen floor ). The only thing we could think to do was the clean the site with a rake, clearing old metal pieces and glass shards , and then I built a cultivator ( heavy wood 8 inch beam with spikes driven into the bottom, and then I cut the spike heads off at an angle with a grinder ) that I hitched to my father’s ride on mower. Then it was just a matter of spending about an hour criss-crossing the spot that was bare. Without this, it would have been a a back breacker to cultivate because of years of being tramped on. Cheers all. Darren.

Not sure if this is a just an off topic thread or just a place for off topic stuff. Since I don't take any medications and I love a hunk of dead cow I'll throw out something that's bothering me.

My father who is 95 has remarried and moved in with his new wife. This has left the home place I came home from the hospital to in 1949 vacant. We have been working on getting the place sold which will leave me with 4 cars without inside storage. It's a nice 4 bed 2 bath two story on a full acre with a big horse shoe drive with culverts wide enough for two cars to come in and out side by side. We hired a contractor to remove a old wooden shed at the rear of the lot. I explained in detail what would happen if they tried to drive anywhere off the raised drive. Imagine my surprise to find their trailer, two of their trucks and two wreckers mired up to their axles in our yard. Any thoughts of what the yard look like now?

If it seems more on topic dad take a blood pressure pill twice a day. On the other hand my mother in law take 17 meds a day. Steve (CTR)

Thanks for your thoughtful and thorough response, Durwood. You are one of the few people that realizes that the most important thing you can do for the health of the planet is to have fewer kids. Kudos to you...

Dan , it pains me to admit it ,but Lupin did miss a few meals. I simply couldn’t tell how long I’d be sleeping when I went to bed. But that dear cat of mine KNEW that something was wrong with me. She would be by my side whenever I woke. I’ve been making it up to her...at least trying. No sh*tty cat food for my girl most days recently. People tuna. Her absolute favourite:-) And lots more to come.

Onetim thats amazing that she had the same troubles as me. The day I woke up just as the sun was going down was a pretty bad day for me. I thought I might be dieing. I’m not kidding...I was worried. Speaking of beer, that whole ordeal was very sobering for me. I’m not a beer fan , but I like to enjoy a few double Vodka and orange from time to time. Tommorow nite I will likely go out to my favourite watering hole and have a few. 3 is just right for me. And tomorrow my Mini is starting her journey to me. Thats reason enough for me to do a bit of what we always called “ partying”. I have a lot of friends at this place I mention, and socializing is important for all of us. And Dan, rest assured that Lupin will be having flaked tuna for supper tomorrow evening.

Veggies et, I hear what you are saying and I have the same concerns. Living on an Island where a lot of people are fishermen/women , there is really only one species that they are catching these last few years. Lobster. All the other species are so scarce that the fishermen can’t pay for there fuel when they try to fish species that were abundant here only 7 to 10 years ago. This huge gap in the marine food chain is a sobering reality and a real tragedy. BTW and purely for what it is worth, I was a complete vegetarian for 17 years. I didn’t become one for health reasons, I did it because my conscience bothered me to be feeding my cat while eating the cows. Complete truth. If I BS, I make sure it is obvious. Ultimately I converted back to an omnivore because I was wasting away. I certainly don’t regret that I did what I did in becoming a vegetarian. And although I NEVER preached nor tried to convert anyone,my brother would say “ Oh, your going to kill that innocent carrot are you “. Even if we are fortunate enough to live to a 100 in great health, it will seem like a blink when we get there. I’m glad we have had this conversation. We need to talk about the condition we are leaving the Earth in. Talking is at least making us aware of how life on our planet is in a very dangerous position. My thought on the subject is that if we can be strong enough to wilfully limit our children to an average of one per couple for a century and a half we will lower our population to a level that the Earth can handle. Roughly 1/4 of our current population. I think this is our only solution if we want life to continue on Earth.

Peace friends , Darren.

Even ignoring the fact that the vast majority of fish oil products are contaminated with heavy metals, with mercury being the most common, the most recent evidence in the medical literature shows absolutely NO benefits with respect to preventing cardiac events (heart attacks) in double blind placebo-controlled studies. Additionally, for those who care about the environment, the production of fish oil products is decimating the population of menhaden, the species of fish most commonly used in its production. In summary, fish oil supplements are neither safe nor effective.

A friend of mine was hospitalized for pneumonia, the second time just a couple of weeks later, the doctor wanted a full list of what she was taking. Turns out the teaspoon of cod liver oil just before bed was the cause. Should have stuck with beer. Pure elixir of malt and hops, beats all the drugs, and all the drops.

What a strange month I have had. So strange that I am sharing it here. To get right to the point, I was getting too much sleep. I was starting to worry that something might be very wrong with my health. I would go to sleep at about 11pm or midnight, and I was waking up in the mid afternoon. This was not only very unusual for me, but I was missing half of the day and still tired when I woke up. One day about a week ago I woke up and it was just getting light out...so I thought that I might be getting better. A half- hour later I looked out the window and it was completely dark. Night time ! At this point I sat and tried to think what might be wrong. I thought about my last visit to my doctor and I realized that we had not changed my prescriptions. So I had to rule that out. Then I remembered that I had picked up a bottle of Omega 3-6-9, which is a fish oil that is supposed to be good for our general health. Over the counter, no prescription needed. And then I remembered that I hadn’t asked the pharmacist anything about it. So I thought it likely isn’t the cause of my continued sleepiness but that it was worth doing a net search on. After all, I had only started taking it around the time that this sleepiness started, and I couldn’t think of any reason why I was sleeping so much. Well I was suddenly amazed when I read that this product sometimes caused mild insomnia, and sometimes it causes excessive sleepiness ! Reading further I learned that if these symptoms were happening, only about a day or two was required to return to normal after stopping taking it. So I stopped taking it ( I had been taking it before bedtime most of the time, but not always ). After two days without it I was waking up at about 7 am ! And I am still waking around that time now. So that has solved my problem, and I am more than just relieved to be back on track ! So to wrap things up...be aware of this if you ever decide to try this “ supliment “. But beyond that, if you notice some change in some part of your health, try to see if you can find a change that you may have made from your normal routine that coincides with the start of the new symptoms. This has really been an eye opening experience ( absolutely no pun intended ) for me, and from now on I will always ask my pharmacist about taking anything new or even slightly different from before. I should mention that I take 5 different meds daily. This is quite likely why I had such a strong reaction to what is normally a safe and helpful nutritional supplement, and I strongly suspect that my pharmacist could and would have considered the drugs I normally take, and advise me to either use with caution, or to not take it at all.

There you have it my friends. Perhaps this will help someone in some way. Time for bed for this dude. Take good care of yourselves. Darren.
