Reply to all who took the time to help me....much appreciated. Took back out the partially assembled radiator/cowling assembly and cleaned up the bottom radiator hose. Am listing the steps that I finally used so that next time (which I hope does not occur) I will have the order in which I changed the hoses (that bottom radiator hose, which is part of ONE hose that connects four places, is a below average mechanic killer). Steps to install all new hoses in classic mini 1275cc 1.3i 1. Remove all old hoses, radiator & cowling 2. Replace water pump (best time even if not required) 3. Attach all new hoses to engine, heater, etc 4. Drop in radiator, attach lower hose 5. Squeeze in 1 piece cowling, attach with 4 screws to radiator 6. Attach bottom of cowling with long bolt to bottom bracket 7. Attach top support piece for cowling/radiator assembly 8. Hope it will not leak Thanks again for helping, all ideas were tried, some with success & others without success. Few more things to attach.

OMG!!! please do not put any lube or oil or vaseline inside the tube,,, sure it will make it easier to insert it but it will easily pop out too under hot radiator pressure, and no matter how you tighten that clamp, it will pop off because of that lube that you put., jizzz very unprofessional advice...i can't believe it....
WRONG AGAIN.
Others have already advised on which lubricants ARE compatible. Water-soluble lubes will not attack the rubber or silicone and will dissipate, leaving a tight seal. Any leakage would just rinse out the joint, though if the hose is properly installed and the clamps properly tightened, the hose will never slip off.

BTDT and the  speedo cable install also. Usually spray my arm with WD40 which helps it slide into tight places.

Sir Mal, i suspect "somebody" was trying to fit the lower radiator hose but fail, and keeps on cutting the hose little by little to make it fit, that's the reason why the hose becomes 1/2 inches shorter.

Yup, no difference, then and now!

That's what I did.Never imagined doing it the other way. One problem I has was that the new lower hose I was trying to put on (years ago ) seemed about 1/2" too short - I could not pull it up into place without distortion. I had to resort to using the old lower hose which was in fine condition and is still doing fine. Is there any difference between lower hoses for A-series or A+ or for a Metro 1275 transplant?

You are to be commended for remaining calm, no caps or anything! Agree with hose on rad first, and a little bacon fat on ID of hose, it provides temporary slip, plus it smells great.

Will try your idea of cowling attached to radiator. Last several hours trying to get the bottom hose lined up under the cowling and dropping the radiator to attach that lower hose has not worked for me.

I find it easier to install the lower hose onto the radiator and install it as an assembly. If it is a 92 through 96 spi with the original plastic fan you can do it with the radiator cowl attached as a one piece assembly (it is tight but doable).

Don't use Vasoline. use, as Doug Lawson would say "personal water soluble lubricant" Vasoline can and will damage rubber or silicone hoses the last thing you want to do is do that job over again because of a degraded hose. Warm the hose up with some warm water it helps somewhat. Personal lube also works well for installing the windscreen rubber.

My friend was able to do it from underneath the car.  We had it up on jacks and he somehow snaked his arm around and was able to push it in place.  He then held the clamp for me so I could use a 6mm socket with almost 2 feet of extensions to ratchet it down.

Thanks. Will try tomorrow afternoon with the strong sticks. The hose is silicon.

That is a tough one. What kind of hose? rubber or silicon? Silicon will not slide on. put a little vasoline on the inside of the hose, make sure your hose clamp is turned the way you want it.( I like the nut side to the firewall. ) You need a couple of very long and strong sticks. Broom handle or long dowel. And you push , wiggle the hose end onto the rad end. It's tough, but with persistence and perservance it will get on the rad fitting. You'll need a very long screw driver to tighten the clamp, ( did I mention that your clamp screw should have a slot for the screw driver), then finish tightening with the socket wrench. Don't over tighten and strip the clamp.
