I got the Colorado title provisionally approved. "Provisionally" is a pretty strong indication of success - they will be mailing me my permanent plates, so the yellow pickup is now legal!

I did not have to bond the title - after quite a bit of discussion around it, and a couple of "An Englishman's word is his bond, why are you making me feel like a criminal" comments it's good - provisionally.

I would send him one Dan but Al is back home in Canada.
We will have this one sorted ready for me to go back Tuesday  Thx for the offer of help!

whee.. I bond ALMOST every car I  import these days. and NC DMV also requires a title bond for all the NON title states, ALA, GA, KY, NH, Maine. NY, CT, Ver..   just easier to bite the bullet and spend the $300 instead of trying to educate the PHAT lady behind the NC DMV tag office.. later bc  ps.. note all the EU countries   title say in small print. THIS IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP on their titles..

DMV Part II:

Tuesday last week I spent about 3 hours at the DMV trying to get the titles and plates. I was *reasonably* hopeful it would be a successful trip as the time before I was in I had them review all the paperwork and say it was good to go.

Of course, it wasn’t that simple. They had problems with 2 things.

  • They decided that the Ontario bill of sale was foreign and therefore not acceptable. I needed to do a Colorado bill of sale. Of course they can’t take an electronic signature from Al, so have to go back to snail mail. Oh well
  • They decided I needed to do a title bond because I didn’t have an “unexpired” title. They wanted the 2nd “plate” part of the title. Of course, the part I had clearly said that the plate part of the title stays with the seller and is turned into the DMV, so the drones were wrong. I even had a photocopy of it (thanks to organized Al). Title bond is doable, but will cost around $300 I think so I really don’t want to go that way if possible.

Going to try again at a different DMV, hopefully Tuesday.

Are the headlights correct for right hand traffic?  They missed that on inspection of my Jap MINI

Headlamps are so weak, I wasn't worried about blinding anyone. There is no safety check here - only emissions. Wish there was a safety check - so many deathtraps on the road, and I get tired of being blinded by mis-adjusted headlights.

Drive it to testing place - do some shadetree (check photo - yes that's a shade-tree indeed!) double-checking before it goes in and it's at 1.7% and 500. Good deal!
Drives like a dog, but drives none-the-less. Fill up with gas on way since gauge went from 1/2 full to empty in less than 5 min. No smell of gas, so assume it's bad gauge versus gas leak.

Hand over my $15 Get it tested. It fails. 1.6% and 604.   SO CLOSE. GRRRRR.
Adjust slightly - free re-test. 2.59% and 350. Grrr.
It's like putting money in a fruit machine (slot machine to the Americans).
Adjust slightly. Hand over another $15. Restest. 1.81% and 320. That's a pass. We'll take it!
So did you just weaken the mixture until you got a pass then reset it after you left. Seems like a lot of the UK Mini owners do this.
Basically, yes. If we weakened too much though, hydrocarbons went up. (assuming too lean and getting mis-fires?).

Great story so far, sharp looking mini, I hope it all ends well.

Back in the 80's when MI had emission testing we found nipping a hidden hole in the vacuum advance hose was often enough to get a car to pass. Later we just paid a "guy" to give us a passing slip with our vin # on it as testing was done at service stations, and the passing slip was presented at the secretary of state office or DMV

Ha! I'm really enjoying reading about your journey through CO's bureaucratic mine field. When all is said and done, you'll have a great story to tell and some neat photos, not to mention a very nice looking Mini. Keep us posted.
