Thanks for the response.  I suspected this might be the suggestion.

For future searches, this is what I ended up doing.

Not wanting to further disassemble this seized and grubby engine right now, I found that  a head stud fits perfectly in the tube.  With this in place I could clamp some vise grips tightly without crushing the tube.  It was a simple matter to tap the vise grips with a hammer to lift the tube out.

Use a drift from inside the donor block to drive the tube out instead of trying to pull it out.

I need to pull the metal external dipstick tube from my donor engine to use in the one I'm building.  In other cars I've built it just pulls out with a sharp tug, but this one seems particularly stuck.  I'd appreciate any tips for dislodging it as I haven't found anything online or in my manuals.
