Don't sweat this one. There is no need for accuracy filling the dashpot. Fill as described above and/or in Jeg's photo. Anything more than that will spill over the top, get sucked into the engine, and burned. That's OK.

Thanks jeg. That picture jives with one of the two photos I’ve seen, and makes sense. A picture is worth a few hundred words ( today’s economy , etc ;)
Agreed Dan. BTW- I DID but a mechanics syringe so that I could add or remove dashpot oil as needed without making a mess, and also with accuracy.
Cheers all, thanks for the help everyone, Darren.

JEG's photo is the clearest description of how much.
My preference is to not pull the damper piston out but just undo the cap and tilt it aside. This way I can add oil without having to compensate for the volume of the brass piston.

+1 to the above. Fill to about 1/4" below the top of the INNER MOST tube. Anything above that will get sucked away and be burnt.

Fill the inner tube up to just below the top, pop the damper back in and forget about worrying - it finds it's own level.
Don't do what someone once did, and try and fill the entire dashpot...

It doesn't matter.... just make sure there's "some" oil there..

Hi all. Sorry that I have so many questions today. Upon reading the correct height of S U oil for the dashpot ( I threw the cash for the S U brand, but know that many people choose others - whatever works best for you I say ) of my carb ( 1989 single carb ) , I read that the oil level should be at 13 mm Above the top of the piston tube. This amount must surly cause the oil to very slowly leak down past the piston ( or an I misinterpreting what is said ? ) into the carb body ( ? ). Is this to provide a very thin amount of oil to lubricate the piston ? If I am way off ( or a bit off ) I would appreciate knowing what level to set it at relevant to the piston top.
Thank you friends, Darren.
