If you don't already have one, here's something you may find useful: Haynes workshop manual. Part number 646 on this web site.

You may get some Very long winded replies.. but the basic concept is the same.
Put the #1 Piston on TDC. (all the way up) Rockers on #1 = Loose,.
screw in a long 5/16th bolt in the center of the Distrubutor drive to help +hold it... and insert it....
You will insert the drive where the 2 grooves on the top of the drive= when seated= the line of grooves will Point at the Number 1 Spark Plug.
Note (you have to insert and let it twist into place= final resting position will be at the 1 o clock relative position.)
Next insert your Dizzy. The slots are (offset ) and the dizzy will go in fully seated in only on one position .. if the Rotor points to the 'starter' or 7oclock position = the drive gear is backwards (180 degrees 'out") If Backwards. Note the gear = remove and rotate half a turn and re install.
Distrubutor rotor should also point at the number 1 spark plug when on TDC.. All Aligned.
Static time your distrubutor == Good to go!
Man = The internet needs a video of setting this up!

Hello!
I’m new member here.
Recently have bought Austin Mini 1987 LHD with 1.3 carb engine (not original engine). Car is disassambled, today while was puting engine in, had a little fail, that thing with gear in one end in the block (don’t know how to call it in English) which drives distributor, it felt out a bit. So I would like to place it back in correct teeth of gears to have correct timing of ignition. If somebody could post a photo of that shaft-how it positioned, when engine is on TDC, it would be great.
I’m quite familiar with Mpi minis, but this is my first carbed car ever, except ones which I drove when was a kid and should play with toycars.
