Just bought a 195 F thermostat for the 1185cc build...and have the extra rad (can be blocked), and oil cooler (can be blocked) and a sump guard that reduces the airflow past the cooling fins on the transmission.
Also put new batteries in my laser temp reader....
Will let you know how everything worked out on the 8,100 mile ALCAN 5000 return trip.

N on the gauge is about 180 degrees which is where you need to be for the best running conditions.

The purpose of the thermostat is to bring the engine up to optimum running temperature and maintain it. During hot weather, it will open and stay open until the engine is shut off and cools down. In cold weather, it modulates the flow to the rad, maintaining the engine temperature, and therefore heat supply to the heater. If too many holes are drilled the thermostat loses its effectiveness and the engine doesn't maintain optimum temperature during cold weather and may be less efficient at other times.

Just throw them in a pan of water on the stove and see if they open, the difference between a 160 and a 195 i am guessing would be less than 2 minutes.
They are cheap enough to buy i would just buy new.

I need a thermometer. I must have six or eight thermostats sitting in the garage. Because I always buy a new one. I’ve only need the thermometer once before and I really don’t remember what that was 25 years ago. But it would help to throw away some of these ones don’t work. 160’s 180’ and 195’s

The only difference between a 180 and a 160 is the 160 will open sooner.
I don't think it will drop the needle back to where it normally was unless the 180 had failed to open fully.
Good point on the cars with no heaters Chuck.

With all due respect to everyone that answered, The knucklehead at O’Riieles, the and a friend of mine Tom is been doing this for quite a few years. I did not know what I was running in there (180) but the needle went from quarter-inch blow normal kto 3/4+ of the way up the gauge. So for a number of reasons I have decided that I’m gonna put A 160° without any holes drilled into it. In three months when it cools down or if I don’t like it I will change it back. As matter fact I just got done about an hour ago. Thanks again for all those who provided answers.

I run the same as malsal (180) with the addition of drilling holes for all Minis not using the heater valve outlet; such as, Mokes, and some South African cars that did not come with a heater.

I use a 180 degree one here in Florida with no issues.
I only drill them when a Metro or later A+ engine is retrofitted.

160F with 2, 1/8" drilled holes, in my case anything lower or with more hole's and the engine does not warm in cool weather.
