Hi Craig.

Well, really, you're the blame for this 15 year saga (in a good way!).

Back in Vancouver beginning in November, so will make contact to catch up.

Been a long time.

Oh wow. Hi Eric.  Your car build featured in the first issue of MC2 magazine (Winter 2005, Issue 1) was very helpful for mine.

Would love to see pics of your car.

Do you know if Brian's still around?

Dan

Dan, I Bought Brian's frame #5, back in 2003 and finished the conversion in 2005. It has been my daily driver ever since, I will post pics later in the week. ErikG

Cool looking little Mini! I'd like a ride. I like how you kept it stock looking. Might need more than that 7 gallon gas tank though, I probably couldn't keep my foot out of it!

Haven't seen the subframe-only in years but I believe the attached pic is it.  Was offered years before Mini Tec's and was made to fit a stock, not extended front end.

Here's Brian's write-up on this forum back in 2005, a couple of years after I got mine.

Seem to recall that Mini Mania was going to offer it but never came to fruition.

I read your story and looked at your pictures, but I couldn't see this special subframe.

Just picked up my 1987 Rover Mini VTEC that now occupies my garage.

This project began fifteen years ago with the purchase of the Brian Campbell subframe after seeing an internet write-up on Craig's Automotive (Mission, Canada) counter top computer. A Honda B16A2 motor with a Y21 transmission was soon purchase from Evo Garage, a local JDM parts importer. The construction's really been in earnest the last while spurred on by the availability of Jackson Autosport, my trusted local shop in Winnipeg, Canada. They built and still care for my VW Caddy 16V pick up, 23 years on. Thanks to John and Marshall for their mechanical aptitude, fabrication skills and "let's do it right" attitude.

Specs:
- modified Brian Campbell subframe and driveshafts
- JDM Honda B16A2 motor
- Y21 five-speed transmission with Steve Alexander group buy 3.6 final drive gears
- modified intake manifold to clear bulkhead
- Honda Civic radiator
- stock ECU
- custom engine management wiring harness by Marshall
- stock Honda exhaust manifold and custom 2" stainless steel exhaust with Magnaflow muffler by John
- Bosch 044 universal inline fuel pump
- stock 7 gallon fuel tank
- 12" Ultralite rims with Yokohama 539 tires
- Minispares 4 pot calipers for 8.4 solid discs
- Minispares adjustable tie rods and lower arms
- Spax Krypton adjustable shocks, front and rear
- S Racer red coil springs
- Hi Lo adjustable struts
- Wilwood brake and clutch master/pedal assembly
- Speed Hut GPS speedometer

I know of only two owners of completed Mini VTECs with the Campbell subframe, one in California and the other in the UK. That was over a decade ago so I wonder if they still own them? I'd love to let Brian know but his old contact info doesn't work anymore.

My aim was to have a completely stock looking car giving no indication of what lies underneath. I'm happy we've achieved that and the performance is everything I heard about and saw online.

Thanks also to Steve Alexander for the group buy final drive gears, David at Evo Garage for the Honda motor/trans and Mike Smith (Victoria Mini Club) for advice and encouragement.

Back to more fun and sorting out.
