There are various cargo trays available to fit the 1 1/4" receiver.

The Countryman can have a BMW towbar fitted - their towing capacity is huge.
The only Bini that can't tow is the 3-door hatch, as none of them from the original R50 onwards has ever been type approved / homologated for it.

There are lots of 3rd party providers out there who create hitches for the MINIs. I installed one from mnidomore on my new Clubman within two months and never had a warranty issue.

I would think a slightly modified bike rack would work well, one that mounts in a receiver type hitch. not sure what kind of warranty it would void, the car is now 2 years old. I would think if you went to the dealer for warranty work, with your sister, they would have to be pretty cold not to let it slide. Adding the hitch, but not the wiring for lights would be good evidence that you were not hauling a trailer.
