Yes i have seen it done on a MK VI that was converted from internal hinges to external hinges.
The conversion was nice with less than 4k miles on it but the upper hinge pin on the drivers door was showing wear with the weight of the internal hinge door assembly.
If you just need to install check straps because your roll up window door check straps are bad they will work fine, i would use the aftermarket metal check straps as Tamer pointed out over the vinyl factory ones.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

b-, Not sure I understand the question. Both types were made for external hinged Mini doors.

I have the metal ones on mine and I would have them over the leather ones any day.
Just my 2 cents

I used a paper punch and a hammer to punch holes in my black straps.

Green leather strap and stiffeners just arrived.
Next step is put holes in these straps and replace the metal door check.
thanks for your input

As indicated, the metal ones were not a factory option. And I'd call them a downgrade not an upgrade, anyway!

1. I have seen them done both ways but believe green is correct in your case.

2. The part with the retainer thing on it anchors to the wheel well/body.
No they already have the stiffeners built in.

3. Yes they were an aftermarket part.

I have an almond green 1966 S with green seats and grey interior panels.

1) what is the proper color for the leather/vinyl door check strap - green or grey?

2) I also have a pair of metal fixed door stays - BG5401.  What is the proper way to install them?
Do I need retainers or stiffeners like the leather/vinyl door straps.

3) I believe the leather/vinyl was original and the metal fixed door stays were an upgrade.
   Is this correct?
