I'll check the resistance across the solenoid today. Like you say even though its new I can't think of any other way for the starter to get power.

It’s a simple check with a DMM. Disconnect the battery and check for resistance across the large lugs on the solenoid, should be open. One of the most common times for a solenoid to fail is right from new.

It started like this, started car and drove to grocery store. Strange noise. When I turned off engine noise still there. It was the starter still turning. Got home and found the starter solenoid had failed. When I took it out, it rattled. When I replaced it with a new one from our host it would still run the starter even after the the key was turned off. I started the car and when the starter was still running, it didn't do this every time, I pulled the wire off the solenoid that comes from the ignition switch, thinking the problem might be in the ignition switch. Well that didn't make any difference, the starter would still run.
Unless I'm wrong the starter can't run unless it is getting power from the solenoid and the solenoid is brand new??? Anyone have any ideas what's going on???
